"Once we have mastered the Zone System, or BTZS, and have refined our technique and process to achieve that perfect negative, we still need to constantly remind ourselves that a perfectly exposed and processed picture of a turd, is still the picture of a turd." Max Marinucci, 2011

..as I was taking a walk this morning, trying to find some inspiration

Ansel Adams had a more elegant way of conveying the message.
“There is nothing worse that a brilliant photograph of a fuzzy concept.”

...but why beat around the bushes?
Having said that, Ansel Adams may have been able to make a turd look pretty good too... as long as there were clouds involved
My vote for "best turd" would have to go to Ralph Gibson though, because he would be far removed from technique and process and he'd make it look like a million bucks. He'd just burn it in Rodinal 1:25 while tossing the tank around the room and make it a best selling masterpiece, while giving birth to a new approach..the BTTS (Beyond The Turd System).

Which is worse-making a photograph of a turd, or being deterred?

You have little time left, and none of it for crap. A fine state. I would say that the best of us always comes out when we are against the wall, when we feel the sword dangling overhead. Personally, I wouldn't have it any other way.

..and since we're in the theme, one from Ralph Gibson himself..."You see, I'm not interested in mediocrity in photography. I'm not interested in selling cat shit to dogs. I just want to do my own thing. If people like my work, all the better. If they don't, too bad. - Ralph Gibson

Thus spake Messr. Cartier-Bresson:
For us the camera is a tool, the extension of our eye, not a pretty little mechanical toy. It is sufficient that we should feel at ease with the camera best adapted for our purpose. Adjustments of the camera – such as setting the aperture and the speed – should become reflexes, like changing gear in a car. The real problem is one of intelligence and sensitivity.
And -
The difference between a good picture and a mediocre picture is a question of millimetres – small, small difference. But it’s essential. I don’t think there’s so much difference between photographers, but it’s that little difference that counts, maybe.

"In the ten years that I have been coming here there are generally the same kinds of people, and one has the feeling of being on an island. On an island you know everybody and everybody knows you... What we have in common is photography, which is practiced by so many, is understood by so few. Maybe this is a reason we return to <APUG> with the hope of being understood and, perhaps seen... So we come to <APUG> to recuperate, communicate and show what we have done, or, perhaps what we want to do."

Roger Hicks posted this at RFF the other day ... quoting himself

Photography sometimes attracts people with a very high opinion of their own expertise, and a predilection for bossing others about. Listen to some of them, and you will be amazed that silver halide photography ever succeeded at all, given that it is so difficult, complicated, and expensive. Except it isn't.
