You need to expand your horizons and enjoy the explosion of quality and diversity that we are now able to easily experience.

Here's a gallery of the current roster of Magnum photographers:

https://www.magnumphotos.com/photographers/

Not to pick on Magnum in particular, they are just representative of larger trends. Yes, there are still inequities to be overcome.

Heavily loaded with women, and non whites considering how the media plays on racial divisions.

But im not exactly seeing the reason you would pull out the magnum crew as an example of racial inequality.. MOST of the women, Muslims, and non american/european descendents and non japanese, have an immense push to focus on nothing but self percieved inequalities that fit into a very narrow political spectrum.

Alot of the "quality" you are professing, is nothing more then politics. And political subjugation of photography.

diversity doesnt equal excellence and historically speaking in the last 3,000 years of human history ANY time you get seperate groups of peoples living together, you get nothing but misery and blood shed. Look at the Balkans.

We have a vibrant and diverse population here on the West Coast of Canada. I pity you for all you refuse to see.

Actually, it's still mostly white men despite Magnum's trying to do a little better. Seeing a few women and minorities and calling something "heavily loaded" is part of the issue. If one is used to seeing one or no women, and all of a sudden 16% women show up (I counted roughly 16 women of 99 photographers on the Magnum page), it seems like a lot. But it's not. The question is, why does one have to see the presence of other people who are superficially different as a threat? Photography isn't like Calvin's treehouse with a "No Gurlz Allowed" sign. People who are different looking from you aren't going to take pictures away from you. It's actually possible to learn things from different kinds of people.

I had taken a long break from these forums and I am now, once again, remembering why. The signal to noise ratio is simply horrible and appears to have gotten worse. Trying to find an *actual* discussion about photography where people are being civil, respectful, and aren't engaged in (at best) wacky conspiracy theories and (at worst) outright blatant racism and age-old stereotypes. Seriously...where did the photographers go leaving this board to QAnon's rejected applicants? Can someone point me in the right direction?

Nah, it’s just one troll who dug up a thread because they feel entitled and have some sort of pot to stir. They’ve been digging up old threads of controversial topics for a couple days now because they are a miserable useless person.

This thread is three years old... why did you wake it? And especially now?
I am glad you did as it leads me on to a pertinent question. Given the price of colour film now do we now know if there are more photographers of colour than colour photographers? :D

Time for a bit of whimsy to lighten what may be a darkening atmosphere where even Fuji X-tra 800 may not suffice, I feel

This label, people of color, is at the outset another divisive tool used by a political party that has always separated people by race and ethnicity since at least 1825. (Germans against Irish, anti Chinese, Japanese internment ...never discussed is the real estate interests allied with the President who bought up property on the cheap in Little Tokyo). It also still adheres to the One Drop Rule. In the real world I have met people from East Asia with Snow White complexions. I’ve met Germans with darker complexions than my late wife’s. So what does people of color really mean? In NYC, because of their success in getting into selective high schools, there is talk of “decolorizing” Chinese students.
One of my very good friends was the late Bernie Boston, who photographed every President from Truman to Clinton. He never referred to himself as a black photographer, just as a photographer. He contributed part of his success as a White House photographer to kindness from Truman. He was called the dean of WH photographers. Bernie said that the most considerate presidents were Truman and Regan. The nastiest, that guy who spent a lot of time at Lolita Island.

There is a subforum on Photrio called the Soapbox. It was literally made for you.

Please do not send him there. The Soapbox does not need him.

Sorry about that Sirius. My effort to pawn him off on you failed anyway, at least for now. I see he has joined Trendland in the "Restricted Access" club.

I have to stop to have a drink. Would you like one too? Scotch, Rye, Dry Gin Martini, Mai Tai? I was introduced to the Hurricane drink in New Orleans and I make those too now. What would you like?

I found this 'somewhat 'overboard'. i don't give a DAMN whither the photographer is male or female, their 'nationality, 'creed', colour (whatever that 'really' means) religion (or lack thereof). In my early years I was 'taught' to respect any and everyone with whom I had contact. I passed all that on to my children when they were 'old enough' to understand, and expect them to do the same should/when their children are old enough to 'understand'
