What I am amazed at is that two photographers were present at the exact moment that a small thermonuclear device detonated on top of a woman's head.

That's why the man is crying.

G'day all!!!

Without trying to sound like a know it all :whistling: ; and in no particular order here:

Bunny Yeager was in fact dark haired and blonde by the bottle, early on in her professional years (Dead Link Removed) (http://www.bunnyyeager.net) but to the best of my research she did not venture to NYC to photograph or for that matter she did not venture much out of Florida in the 50's.

Meier was in fact born in France and came to the US, with NYC being her first port of call. Many of her photos are unmistakably in Gotham. She did settle in Chicago to become a nanny to at least 2 families and did venture back to NYC on at least one occasion. But I do have reservations about her lack of fashion sense, as I believed that she had tried not to be noticed when shooting on the street. She also seems to have used the TLR from about waist level (at least from looking at some of her work - self portraits and others) while the Brassai image has the woman using the magnifier in the viewfinder right up to her face.

Oh and @ Regular Rod are you referring to the photo in front of the NYC Public Library of the fashionable woman on the steps as shot thru the bus window? The subject here could certainly be the mystery woman but I doubt that Meier had photographed herself thru the bus window.

And @ Clive H. I couldn't find any reference to Jane Brown visiting NYC or using a TLR? Do you have any references?

All kidding aside I do thank one and all for the various thoughts and observations about thermonuclear weapons that people those days wore on their heads...............!! Thank goodness those days are over.

More wood for the fire.

Cheers!
Sam

She was born in New York according to the official website and if you check my first post on this thread you will see that I compared the photographer in the pdf from the OP with this photograph Dead Link Removed

The photograph you referred to was posted to show that she did indeed work in New York.

@ Clive H yes you are right; my predictive text nonsense kicked in while I was typing although I DID do a search for Bown and not Brown. I really must learn to proof read, eh?

@ Richard yes you are right and I was wrong about VM's birthplace. My faulty memory came from the documentary film about her. In the film she goes to France (on a visit); doesn't come from France (as a migrant).

To me it is still up in the air (although I think that I am leaning towards EA because of the shape of VM's nose). I found these pictures of both women around the usual traps: top left is the mystery girl, top right is EA and bottom two are VM. I might write to the two archives of VM's work and ask if they have an elusive photo of Brassai in the collection.... Interestingly enough the documentary site explains that VM moved to Chicago in the year before the Brassai photo was made, however she travelled to South America during the time Brassai was in NYC. I'm thinking that she may have come back to the port of NY to travel south ...........

Anyway cheers all,
Sam
