This line from David Vestal's article The Non-Cosmetic Print
bespeaks my sentiments.

I take it by " picture " he means the subject on film. Dan

I tend to disagree, when viewing any print the viewer should be able take the print at face value, however the photographer arrived at the final image should not be important to the viewer.
