I have checked listed hotels in the immediate vicinity of the pavillion-those suggested on their website-- and the price of a single night is about the same as the price of a good used 8 x 10 lens in shutter.....so thought a bit of a hike would do me good, would like to stay several days and do some street photography-am to old for the hostel requirements......

The Milburn on the Upper West Side isn't too bad compared to the midtown hotels.

If you don't mind a bathroom down the hall, check out the Larchmont, which is a beautiful European-style hotel near Washington Square. They have a website that is something like larchmonthotel.com.

This place is by me on the Jersey side of the Hudson River and realistically about 30 minutes from midtown NYC via bus. A good location if you're driving in. Rooms start at 100 a nite with hi speed internet access and it's close to some fine restaurants, a bagel shop, a really great trail that passes beneath the George Washington Bridge and the suspected final resting place of some former union leaders. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about transit, etc

The web site says 2 miles from Mid town Manhattan......(City View Best Western) I am not exactly shure where the Metro Pavilion is located.....The Washington Bridge area sounds interesting...as does Dave's suggestion (not the one with the bath down the hall-the other one) :D

I'd recommend calling the Best Western and ask how long a walk it is to the nearest train, and what line is it on. If it's near the G train, fuggedaboudit (it runs from Brooklyn to Queens). If it's on the J, M, Z line, then it's about two trains and a short walk to where the convention is. You could also be near the L train, which would be pretty good, actually, since it runs along 14th St in Manhattan, and the Metro Pavilion is on 18th.

Bus transportation to Manhattan from Greenpoint exists, but you'll probably find it slow, and cabs can get costly. If you stay there, check out Mike's Meats for a better selection of old-style Polish sausages than you'll find in Warsaw.

In Honolulu it's 5:40 p.m., but I'll be back in New York tomorrow. Semester starts after Labor Day for us.

I've been hiking around both areas alot recently and they are treasure troves for any street photographer, historian or lover of fine world cuisine. Contact me off line if you'd like any assistance.
Cheers
