Petzval to Hassie....

This may be a stupid question, but I know nothing of Petzval lenses, other than the brief history I've googled.

But can you adapt a smaller petzval lens to a Hasselblad 500cm body?

You can, I've adapted one to mine, other folks have too. I'd say it works best with a Petzval that has a focusing mount. You lose shutter speed flexibility, since you're dependant on the rear shutter and your "press button/release button" tiiming accuracy. Though you could mount one to a Microscope shutter, if you can find one, or buy one of the glass-less Hasselblad lenses on ebay.
It may be hard to achieve the swirls everyone likes working when with 6x6, my Petzval is around 180 mm FL, and on the Hasselblad, the sharp center region fills most of the frame.

I made an adaptor to fit a small 5" ish darlot to my hasselblad 201f ....i used a body cap and some ABS piping to get the right focal length... Worked well.

you can, but how about focussing?

I have both hasselblad and rolleiflex SL66 - the latter is very easy to fit other lenses on, and as the shutter is in the camera, there are no problems with expoeure time. Also as the lens is fitted on a bellow - focussing is easy.

I have used small projection lenses, and swirley images can be had..

I don't have any gallery images made with it, but here are pix of the rig.
I had a Hasselblad Lens Mount adaptor which I drilled and tapped for the Petzval's flange. Then it needed an extension tube to get it out to reasonable focusing range. Fine focus happens with the focusing rack on the lens.

With the 500 series, what do you do for a shutter with a brass lens mounted?

use the barndoor shutter---I think I had a 500 c that synched to that shutter too--don't have that camera anymore--but that works for "timed" shots.

otherwise--rig a packard or if the lens can be front mounted in a large lf shutter, then that's the only other way--or "devise your own"

Bob Herbst has installed adjustable bellows (appears to be novoflex or similar) to the front of the blad and attached a 4x4" lensboard receiver to the front of that.

OHHHHH...I almost forgot---use a DOUBLE cable release with any shutter that will fit the lens--then you get full functionality of the camera--I have a double myself for the old style bellows and 1.4 shifter adapter--they are tunable for synching
