We may applaud Lik for circumventing the art market gatekeepers. But eventually the art buying public will recognize that the emperor has no artistic clothes. Then the gatekeepers will be reinforced as to the worth of their value judgements. And artists will again be supplicants to them. Nothing will have changed.
I've been in his store in Lahaina, Maui and I have no idea about the "art" market but it doesn't seem like the "art" buyers are the same people who he sells to. I could be wrong.
His approach seem a lot more like home decor than "art" collecting per se. Dead Link Removed
I'll tell you one thing, I wouldn't want to be paying the rent he's paying for his stores/galleries in the trendy places he's in. I count about 16.
Love him or hate him, he seriously has to sell some prints to pay that kind of overhead.
