Perma Wash & lith film

hello

Is it safe to use Perma Wash with APHS lith film. I know that an acidic stop bath is not recommended (creates pinholes) but I can't find any info about wash aids. Without washaid, I'm assuming that a standard 20-30 minute wash is sufficient?

APHS is a slow thin emulsion sheet film. At least
I've not heard of it in rolls. I suggest you give it the
Ilford wash sequence, tray or tank wise that is. Use
room temperature water. Three changes and 5 to
10 minutes should do; 2, 3, and 5 minute soaks
with some agitation. What size and number of
sheets have you in mind? Dan

Dan, I'm using 11x14 sheets and have been washing 10-15 minutes in running water. But I'm wondering if that is long enough and whether I can use Perma Wash with this film.

I would have thought that a true Llith film is so tough that it needs little more than a thorough rinsing. The chemicals just don't soak in.

that has been my experience, with various lith films from Polychrome, Kodak and Agfa. A short wash (3-5 mins)is all that I've needed and testing shows no retained fixer.

That film is similar to RC paper. The only portion
that wets is the emulsion and that is likely no
more than a few thousand's of an inch thick.

AFAIK, hca is optional with such materials. Three
one liter changes of room temperature water with
one, two, and three minutes I'd think sufficient.

One at a time inter-positives tray processed? APHS is
used for that purpose. Also it is used for direct
negatives using a reversal process. Dan

If you are using a rapid fixer that contains ammonium ion, 20-30 minutes of washing should be sufficient, and a wash aid should not be needed (but won't hurt anything).

Washing aids are often made of sodium sulfite, a water softening agent like calgon, NDTA or sodium citrate and water (Kodak HCA is an example)..

Per its MSDS (Material Safety Datata Sheet), Permawash is very similar to HCA and other wash aids, it contains sodium sulfite, ammonium sulfite, sodium citrate and water.
