I think that's for making lens blanks (ground and polished to correct diopter strength and cylinder, but left oversize and round) fit and correctly center in eyeglass frames. I'd be surprised if it would handle the thick, deeply curved lenses we commonly use in cameras; to an optometrist, +4 or -4 diopter is very strong, but +4 diopter is 250 mm focal length.
It would be very useful if a small optical lab were interested in custom fitting lenses to customer frames, though...
