I just finished reading this entire thread and it is terrific to read some positive news for a change, regarding the film business.

Since Ilford restructured (and AGFA's unfortunate demise) I have begun to switch over to your products, because as long as Ilford thrives, my Leica's won't starve to death.

I'm still a die hard Tri-X shooter, but everything else is now from Ilford, including Delta 3200, FP4+, papers and chemicals.

Return of ID11 Replenisher 2.5ltr & Bromophen 5ltr

Dear APUG members,

Just to let you know that ID11 Replenisher and BROMOPHEN should be shipping in the next couple of weeks to distributors, a couple of weeks after that we should see the long awaited return of the NEW ILFORD WASHAID
( sorry it was a bit delayed ).

So all the chemicals due back, are now back ( or imminent )...

Thanks for being so patient, we have had requests for different packaging volumes of various of our chemistries, we will keep looking at the options.

No worries Simon - Zelda is only trained to go after people who say, "You really should go digital!" And that really is her smile...it took a bit of getting used to when I first adopted her, as she would do that whenever I returned home, or tried to reprimand her for something she'd done wrong.

In amongst the enlarger, easel, safe light, dev tank, and a few chemicals and some old packets of Kodak paper is a sealed 17m bulk roll of FP4 (note it is FP4 not FP4+). It is packaged in a round tin, and the company address is given as:

ILFORD Limited Basildon Essex,
a CIBA-GEIGY Company
10923232

Any ideas as to how old this roll of film is?

I would guess it is between 25 and 40 years old.

It is prior to 1982 :

It should have an expiry date on it, which means it will have been manufactured 2 or 3 years before that date.

Thankyou Simon. I see no expiry date on the can's labels, the only other number is 'L81' off to one side on the front label. That could be the year of manufacture I suppose.
I'll have to test some. I don't know how well it was stored over the years, I do know for the last couple of years at least it was in a box inside a case in an attic. So it may give something or it may be useless. Only shooting it will tell!

Just wanted to say that I have been using Perceptol 1+3 lately as per Barry Thorntons suggestions, with FP4+ (EI 50) and Tri-x (EI 200) and standard intermittent agitation. Got some really nice negs to print. Lovely. Long live Perceptol!

I'd be curious to know what times you use for that dilution and at what temperature. I wish I had bought that Thornton book.

Hi Chazzy,

For EI 200 I have used the Kodak time of 15 mins at 20ºC, and the massive dev chart time of 16 mins at 20ºC.

Barry recommended 20% less development than normal for EI 200 in his book but did not say what normal was. I cant find any data for Perceptol 1+3 and Tri-X at 400, so I use the Kodak and massive dev times for Tri-X at 200 which I what I presume you would get at anyway by taking EI 400 times and reducing by 20% as this is what most recommended times seem to do.

The basic point that Barry was making was that when diluted Perceptol at 1+3 reduced the sulphite content to below 100 mg/L thereby negating its fine grain effects, leaving just the metol to produce edge effects, etc. It looks good from my exerience.
