Pentax SP1000 rewind shaft

So, yesterday I decided to try my hand at replacing the top plate for the SP1000, all went well untill I began to finish and reassemble the rewind knob. I realized the camera door was closed and the rewind shaft rolled around loose inside. I figured how to re-open door w a small bent wire down the shaft hole and pulled up to release the door. But, now the problem, the re-wind shaft wont fit back up in the hole, will not emerge through hole so I can screw on top re-wind cap. What did i do wrong, is there any advise out there, seems like the simpelest things always creat the problems..Help
