They are the smallest and lightest of their kind with the largest viewfinders.

With the 40mm pancake lens, they are jacket pocket size. The M42 fisheye - with an adapter, is also quite small. Both are very good lenses, again if found in good condition.

You need another sample of the MX. There is significant paint loss on the side.

the film advance clutch
( maybe that is the same as the take up spool ? )

There is the advance axle with the sprocket wheel and there is the take up spool. The take up spool is driven by the advance axle by means of a clutch.

i didn't take it apart and fix it, but i take it to a repair person to repair it
and my repair guy said " had to replace the clutch"
years later i the same proceedure done by the man on my penft ...
i figure stuff wears out ofter 40 years? i know my car's clutch doesn't last forever either

Fortunately the MX has a removable back. But I did manage to get a nice black MX . . .

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. The pancake lens is perfect.

I wish the JCII had adopted a standard on where to place those stickers; I've seen them even across an aperture ring.

I say they should've placed them on the bottom of the camera. Perhaps they did not realize many people don't want to remove the stickers.

Ok!
I have a small number of M42 lenses, which system is best for using them, Olympus or Pentax?

I have the original M42->K adapter , but is much better to use a M42 camera, because of auto aperture. And possibily the best M42 camera is the Spotmatic II.

How to change lenses with a installed film?
What do you think about the comparison of MX/ME with the Olympus OM-1? Which advantages are there?

The MX is smaller, sexier, better built, better viewfinder, better meter display, lower shutter vibration, tougher wind advance, and probably has a wider lens selection. And more ergonomic.

Pentax was an older, bigger company than Olympus, with much more budget for R&D and an enviable history as the pioneers of japanese SLR cameras and optics. It was expected that they would create a superior product.

As for the LX vs MX vs ME, the MX has a smoother shutter than the ME (horizontal shutters almost always win).

The LX was too big for me to prefer over the MX. The LX is small for a professional camera! But the "professional camera" category is already well covered by my F-1s and F2s.

Despite that, the MX is almost pro.

As a user of OM system and owner of several M42 lenses, I must say that there's no M42-OM adapter available without an optical element in it. Which means quality loss. Not to mention that if the lens is a later model, or Japanese, which have automatic diaphragm, you won't be able to stop it down.

That is why I still have Zenit camera in the cabinet.

P.S. Please someone tell me that there is an adapter without optical element, I'm tired of Zenit.

The Lx wasn't too big for me but I wanted too long till Lx was discontinued. Last pricing was USD 4500,- with 1.2/50mm.
By the way it is nearly impossible to find a MX in New condition.

with regards

PS : Later Pentax revived LX with the Y2K edition. This Pentax one may find in 100% New condition but on horrable pricing.

No, of course LX isn't that big, but it hits the wallet too hard, unlike ME Super or even MX.

Why don't you get a Pentax Spotmatic? Or a Praktica LTL, which has perhaps the best implementation of stop-down metering there is?

Mostly because I won't get rid of Zenit (it's a gift from someone important to me and it is in pristine condition). But also because right now I'm switching from OM to Pentax and new K mount body will accept M42 lenses via M42 to K adapter, which I already have and use successfully on digital Pentax K-x.

I have Pentax MX and the original M42->K adapter, but I prefer to use the spotmatics for M42 lenses (i have the F and the IIa spotmatics). Auto diaphragm operation makes all the difference in the world.

Another great camera for M42, and a little known secret, is the Canon EF-M with the M42->EOS adapter.
