So my friend gave me a Pentax k 1000 body which he found up in my basement. The shutter speeds appear to be accurate, but when I attach my 50mm 1.7, which works perfectly on my other k-mount bodies, the aperture does not seem to change. THe aperture does not change, except for from 1.7 to 2.8. Then, if I continue to turn the aperture ring, the aperture does not change. When I then loosen the lens from the body, the aperture changes. Is there anything I can do to fix this? In addition, it sounds as if something is loose in the body. If I shake the camera, I can hear a rattling sound. In addition, can anyone recommend a place to buy new light seals :D?

The camera meters at full aperture-- it shouldn't change at all when mounted! Especially since the body has no DOF preview.

It should hold the camera at open aperture for easy composition and focusing, then the camera will stop the lens down as it fires the shutter. The aperture is coupled to the camera, so it will meter correctly without it stopping down.

It's interesting that it stops down to f/2.8.

There's a guy on the PentaxForums that does great light seal kits-- I forget his name, but everyone there knows him. I redid my ME Super and MX with his stuff. It's excellent.

If you decide to get the camera worked on, Eric Hendrickson is a Pentax technician who does great work and charges a very reasonable price. Pentaxs.com.

For light seals: Jon Goodman

That's his name!

His kits are very reasonably priced, too. If you do plan on getting it serviced, Eric does light seals at that time. Depending on how deteriorated they are, parts could've fallen into the working parts of the camera and caused other issues.

It seems like the price of well-working K1000's is going up, and with it being free, it would definitely be good to give it a CLA.

It should not rattle...

If you fire it on B hold the release down and turn the aperture ring the iris should change properly.

Cut up mouse mat and use double sided pressure sensitive tape.
