Hello,

I screwed up. Took my Pentax to the beach and although I took precautions still got a few grains of sand stuck in the focus ring. It was crunchy when I turned the focus but it went away after a while but now the lens won’t focus correctly. It won’t go up and down when focusing unless I squeeze the focus ring. Is there anyway to fix this myself or should I just send it away to Eric? I definitely would like to try to fix it myself if there are any guides or anything of the sort.

If the grit's in the helical It's not where you want to learn camera repair. Trust me.
One of the more frustrating things with lenses is separating a helical. Well, not the separation part
but the puttin' the furshlunger thing back on the right thread. There are depending on the lens as many as six or seven different start points
and a beginner can easily spend that many hours messing with it.

^ That is so very correct  . Peter
But if your patience needs some testing , go for it . Keep a fine felt marker handy and as you're unscrewing it (ever so slowly ) mark where it came unscrewed
and then try to reassemble , also take lots of close up pics .
