Heya,

Just wondering if anyone has had experience with the Pentax 645, 35mm wide angle lens (21mm equivalent). Love my 645 just wanting to go a bit wider and would love to hear from some people with experience.

Well for what they are going for on keh, they must be pretty good. Some guy named Ken Rockwell likes them as well.

I have a 45mm and sort of wish I had bought one before the prices skyrocketed last year.

The existence of this lens is only reason I'm shooting 645 format. The SMC-A manual focus version was at the time priced similarly to what top 21mm lenses in 35mm cost used, and seems every bit as sharp as anything I've got (and I've got some rather exotic 35mm lenses).

While I don't have a lab set up to test the actual resolution, 30+ years of eyeballing this stuff says it's macro sharp. When shot on film like Astia, Velvia or Ekta that can resolve 100 lp/mm the lens doesn't seem to be presenting much or any bottleneck. On film I see just amazing amounts of fine detail, quite astoundingly good. Lens is reasonably resistant to flare, too; I often include the sun and backlight subjects in the scene. And from what I see on film (have only the P645N) the lens is not going to be breaking a sweat to resolve the ~90 lp/mm that the smaller than FF P645D sensor.

One online comparison (16:9 site) against Zeiss Biogon/ Rollei/ Mamiya lenses of the same lengths has the Pentax SMC-FA version running neck and neck and even besting the field working apertures of f/8-16. That comparison is long in the tooth and was shot on a Canon 1Ds sensor and not film; my version (SMC-A) resolves a LOT better than the numbers 16:9 would seem to indicate. The MTF chart on PhotoDo is the only other site that I've found with test results. My copy of the lens suggests it's even better than the numbers would indicate.

The FA version became a cult-classic but may not work any better or even as well as the older SMC-A version, at least according to a P645D user who's exhaustively tested post over on the Pentax Forum. (Of course, the FA is autofocus, however, and could be bought new until just a couple of years ago).

The main drawback to this lens (or for that matter any of the very best that MF has to offer) is that you're going to need a better scanner than a Nikon Coolscan 8000/9000 to wring out all that detail off the best chromes or negs. 4K dpi just isn't going to scrape all that's there.

I agree with Pupfish, this lens is better than you would even guess on the basis of its reputation. I have the A version as well. It cost me €300 at the time. I never regretted it, because the resolution is mind-blowing, but on top of that colour rendition and contrast are superb as well. And how they managed it, is beyond me, but for a 21mm there is just not the distortion you almost automatically accept as a given.
I use it on a pair of 645N cameras. It is in the bag at all times, unless I carry a K-x and a 645N with just the 45-85mm zoom. That's a compromise on my part.

I'll mirror the reactions here saying the A 35mm f/3.5 is a great lens. I have owned the FA 35mm, the A 35mm and the FA 33-55mm at the same time. I sold off the FA 35mm. I did not do brick wall testing, but from what I like to shoot the A 35mm was more than adequate.

I sold the A 35mm thinking the FA 33-55mm would be enough, but ended up getting another copy of the A 35mm, which I took to Ecuador and sold to my friend there - he liked it so much. Came back to the US and found another nice copy of the A 35mm and purchased it. I'm going to learn from my experiences and just hang onto this one.

It is solidly built. It is sharp and fun to use.

This focal length and the 645 format finds a real sweet spot.
The layout of the lens suggests it's tremendously retrofocus (which helps with distortion, perhaps?). Too, it's an actual 35mm focal length, not 21mm. Longer f/l wide-angle lenses just seem more natural to me in 3D subject-relationship perspective.

Ha, Yuri, you learned from that SMC-A I sold you. It looked like hell but was a damned nice performer. I literally DID shoot brick wall tests with it on a digital 35mm body, if you recall. I'm glad to hear it's having a new life down south

I've posted my FA35 on another forum for weeks with no takers - it's not something that moves quickly unless people smell a "stonkin' deal" (i.e. underpriced) but the FA is a really great lens both on 645 as well as on a 35mm with a shift adapter.

A SMC-FA version just sold for $2K USD recently on the 'bay. Trade in these has been quite brisk of late...

Hi Greg. Yeah, that is one sweet lens. My friend just loved the lens and the great deal - I sold for what I paid you. It is making photos that are being published! So, it is finding a lot of use down in Ecuador.

I saw your FA 35mm and that is a really nice price. Good luck with your sale.
