There is very little to fear from ordinary citizens.

I would say nothing, if you believe the statistics. More to fear from doctors, with something like 80,000 nosocomial deaths per year compared to around 1500 deaths due to accidental shootings.

One of the words that really annoys me is comptroller.

Is that a real word? I have only heard it used on The Simpsons. Still, I suppose it is a perfectly cromulent word if you think about it.

Comptroller is a government functionary, like the Comptroller of the Treasury at the federal level, or state Comptrollers.

Controller, in contrast, is a financial position within a corporation.

Both are well-defined and understood functions on this side of the pond.

Yes, a genuine word so says the OED. Which by the way gives the correct pronounciation.

They used to be joined by the hippocratic oath.
That was replaced long ago by the Mega-HedgeFund Oath.

Recently it's been complicated by the TimeShare Condominium conundrum.
