PC synch cable not working

Hi there,


I’d posted this question in the Lounge but didn’t get a definite reply


Bought a PC synch cable but can’t get it to work with Nikon SB-20.

The flash is working (fires off off Nikon FE hot-shoe or even attached to a Canon digi P&S). The synch cable and flash’s PC socket appear to be working as well – if I connect the cable and short-circuit the other end, the flash is tripped.

However, I tried connecting it to three cameras and nothing happens. The cameras are: Nikon FE (in a very good condition, everything working) a Zorki (seems to be working, untested) and a Polish box camera from the ‘60s (makes pictures, PC socket untested).

While it is certainly possible that all those cameras have their synch sockets damaged, I’m beginning to suspect I’m doing something wrong.


Is there such a thing as “an incompatible PC cable”? I’ve been under impression they’re standard.


Am I understanding correctly that to trip the flash, the camera simply short-circuits the leads at the PC terminal?

The PC sockets might be corroded. There used to be a tool you could purchase that would burnish the interior contacts, but I can't seem to find one after a short google search...

You might try shooting some contact cleaner on the pc cord head, inserting it and rotating it to try to clean the sockets.

Sounds like a bad cord. In addition to contact cleaner, also try tightening the ends.

Since shorting the other end produces a flash, the cable is good. The problem must be in the actual connection to the camera - such as an improper fit. The FAQ mentioned above describes a few things to check for.

Is the camera end of the cord a Nikon style screw on fitting? These are very loose on standard PC cameras and don't make good contact. I think you can make them fit better by crimping the end of the circular part of the fitting just a little bit so that it grabs on better. If you put the PC plug on and it doesn't stay tightly, then this is the problem.
