I don't know why some people insert their less than a penny knowledge, especially when it contradicts a man who has spent his life teaching and doing photography. Gotta love the internet!

I use bleach to clean reels for what it is worth. It gets rid of pyro stains which is a plus.

"their less than a penny knowledge"

Love the way you said it.

Well, there are most different sort of bleaches.

From time to time, I put the reels in the dishwasher, together with plates, glasses, etc. Sometimes, I even wash this way the whole tank, dismounted.

I do this also. So far, so good. I've even heard of washing engine parts in the dishwasher......:whistling: Of course, I'd NEVER do that.....

If you use a dishwasher, be sure to either omit the rinse aid, or rinse the reels thoroughly before they dry.

And photo-flo residue doesn't develop film, but it does affect how the developer develops film - so its best to avoid photo-flo contamination.

If and when I ever get to put together another darkroom from scratch, I'll include a dishwasher in the area outside the darkroom.

I'd bet that the rinse aid is equivalent to photo-flo. Dishwashers are wonderful! Ours is downstairs, the "darkroom," the upstairs bath, is quite away from the darkroom. How does photo-flo affect development? I could imagine that it might be beneficial in helping to avoid air bells, etc, by assuring thorough wetting of the film by the developer. In any case I'd imagine that the amount carried over has to be minuscule.

How does photo-flo affect development?

As I understand it, photo-flo residue on the reels can affect developer flow, and thus the uniformity of development.
