Hello and Greetings. A new thread in the APUG group section, US Pacific Northwest group. WA-OR-ID and State of Jefferson
It was time that the Pacific Northwest APUG members and photographers have some activities and gatherings in our beautiful part of the world. Washington, Oregon, Idaho and those in the State of Jefferson are all welcome. We're open to those members who reside in British Columbia as well! So, if you wish to join up? Please do so! There is a plan to host our first gathering in Newport, Oregon on Saturday-Sunday September 13-14. So far this will be a meet and greet with portfolio peeks and a field trip or two. More details to come!

This is fantastic news. I, for one, have really missed the camaraderie of film folk. I enjoy all forms of photography, so I still play with my photo buddies who have gone all or mostly digital, but the experience is lacking in a way I don't think I can articulate, even to myself.

If we have to draw from a wide geographical area to find kindred spirits, so much the better. And, what better geography than our own PNW.

Thank you, Robert, for getting this going!

This was a group activity and a big Thanks goes to Don for getting the ball rolling and to you, Denis for scouting out the Newport location.. This will be fun for us Apuggers in the PNW!

Don and everyone,

This sounds like a great plan, please keep me posted on the events. I am planning on being their. Maybe I could be there a day or two early if help is needed in setting things up.

Sign up on the new Group site

So, far we have only three members sign into the US Pacific Northwest site.
Sign up even if you wish to have a group meeting in Seattle or Tacoma.
The more the better I say!

Vashon, Tacoma, and Norman Edson

Most people I know on Vashon went there to escape either Tacoma or Seattle.

There was a wonderful pictorial photographer, I believe he was from Vashon, named Norman Edson. Anybody know anything about him? He sold his work at the Bon Marche in Tacoma, among other places. Some of the finest images of Mt. Rainier I've ever seen had his signature; I have one that was taken from Vashon, hand colored. I've seen it in several versions; my copy is one of the best of them. He also did gold-tones, which were superb; I brokered a pair of them for someone else, and regret deeply I couldn't afford them for myself.

I was in the 100 years of Washington Photography show at the Tacoma Art Museum (wasn't that in 1989?). Dan Fear curated it, and he asked for my Mt Rainier cibachrome print from Sunrise Park, which I gave him for the show. I asked him whether he had ever heard of Edson; he never had. Edson ought to have been in that show.

Hardly anyone seems to know about Edson. I'd hold his pictorial work side by side with Asahel Curtis, and I bet he'd win hands down. Curtis was very direct, almost naive, and used limited compositional devices; Edson could and did construct a more elegant image. On the other side, he didn't have Curtis' amazing range nor his abundant energy, and he didn't invent the Mountaineers. His views were standard views from down on earth, but WHAT standard views! The guy had an eye. The attached image is a q&d (quick and dirty) with the reflection of my red t shirt in the glass; I'm not expecting it to be beautiful, just want to see if it rings someone's bell.

Since we are talking here about a subgroup, and Northwest content (and even Tacoma!) it seems to me that the very rich and generally unknown photographic history of this incredible area ought to be of some interest. As a part of that history I'd like to know more about it and also share my own experience.

I think that is great! A little history is always welcome in my book. I tried to see your image but could get a good clear view of it.

Norman Edson lived and had a studio and darkroom on Vashon Island. The studio and darkroom are gone but the house is a b&b. The heritage Museum on Vashon had (has?) a show about him. We own one of his hand colored prints. His work is very collectable. A side note, do you know what is Dan Fear doing these days? I loved his Silver Image gallery in Tacoma and later in Seattle.
I would to attend a gathering, but is hard to travel too far. Seattle or Tacoma is about it for me right now.

Thanks for the information on Edson. I have a couple of his pieces, and love them. I'd like to see the show; one of these days I'll get back to Vashon. I have friends there I haven't seen for some time.

Aside, soto voce:

I don't know what Dan is doing or where he is, but I may be able to find out. Dan is a really valuable resource for us in the western WA area, if he is still active. I showed at Silver Image before he moved to Seattle.

Do you happen to know Ken Slusher ? He was the Vashon bus driver for some time and a wonderful photographer; showed as a group of just himself but as 6 separate identities with as many different names in a variety of as many media at the Blue Heron(?) gallery in Vashon once. Wow, that had to be in the mid '80s. I'd ask him about Dan. I suspect he'd know.

I encourage all of you that responded to this thread or via PM.....to go to the "Groups" tab and look for the PNW forum....then please join so we can continue to plan the Newport Meet in September, as well as other locations that others may be working on.

So....please don't post to this thread.....but please do join us under "Groups" and the "Pacific Northwest. You don't have to be in the Pacific Northwest or State of Jefferson to join ---> we welcome anyone that has an interest in this region.

We're open to those members who reside in British Columbia as well!

Well, those that live south of Fifty Four - Forty as least...

Perhaps we could just call it The Oregon Territories Group.

A note to all you PNW'ers who have been lucky enough to be away from your computer for the last month: The planning for our first get-together is coming along on our new Group Forum. Please join in! (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

For those of you wondering what is happening -- Denise (jointly with Kirk Keyes) are teaching a dry emulsion-making class this weekend.

Understandably, Denise has been focusing on workshop preparation.

Rather than proceed without Denise, the rest of the team ( team: Denise-Robert-Rich-Don) planning the event agreed to wait until after Denise completes her workshop so that she has the bandwidth to continue as part of our team.

I will tell you that our first cut at a APUG/PNW weekend in Newport had far too many activities/workshops/field trips to squeeze into the available time. We have to spend the time to create a managable schedule.

So if you are interested in the Pacific Northwest but haven't joined up -- please go to the GROUPS page and sign up. We'll be posting a lot more about the final schedule for the weekend of September 12-13 in the next two weeks.

Don

Hi all you PNW'ers. I hope you're waking up to the same bright sunshine as I am. My hibernation brain is realizing that it really isn't winter yet and there are still months of good weather photography ahead. So, here's a bump on our first regional APUG meeting next month in Newport, Oregon.

Go up to our new dedicated thread in "Groups" and start talking about your ideas for the meeting. And, check in regularly to find out what's going on. It is our hope to have regular, smaller get-togethers, especially fieldtrips. I don't know about you, but I miss going out with folks who move at a LF pace.

I just joined the group. I had looked for an Oregon or Pacific NW or Cascadia or whatever group in the Regions part of APUG and I couldn't find anything.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to Newport this year. If there are future conferences, however, they may be a possibility.

Wesley, it's in the "Groups" section, and not the Regions section. You have to go to the button near the top of this page - it's on the right half of the same button as the Forums link.

Took me a while to figure that out...
