I'm in the process of restoring a Star Premo 4x5 camera and would like to kno what is the best way to remove the white powdery substance from the aluminum parts.

I usually do light cleaning with window cleaner that has a little vinegar in it.

Looks like alka seltzer really works wonders. Not sure what the Pentacon/Contax metal is - looks like nickel-plated steel(?), but I suspect the alka seltzer would work as well with aluminium.

Flitz metal polish is, in general, a good product for cleaning/restoring older metal parts and not damaging them.
