I have used a mercury thermometer for years but I've always considered it in the same way as my light meters. As long as I'm calibrating my entire process around it, it really doesn't matter if it's "dead on" or not. My dev. times work for "my" 20 deg. C - like my film speed is "my" ISO. I think the consistency is more important than the absolute.
