This does not act like fog!

Leaving paper in the developer for such an extended time can cause darkening in even the best paper, and safelights can fog with such extended times in a developer. Therefore, by using such a long time, you get the worst of all possible conditions.

A 1 - 3 minute treatment in total darkness is a reasonable test for fog. After all, if it has not shown up by then it would not be "normal" fog and would probably not affect the print then either.

Thanks for the responses. I will do the suggested safelight tests either tomorrow (Tuesday) or on Thursday.

Dear Steve,

This batch 73B601 was coated in July 2002

The results are in: I did the requisite tests for safelight fogging is there is absolutely none. I did check carefully. It's clear that the paper is fogged. It turns out (see above) that the paper was coated eight years ago. I had estimated that I received the paper from B&H four years ago, but it is clear, at least, that the paper is eight years old. In any case, the Orthazite does appear to have solved the problem. I've already printed three days with it (full archival processing along with selenium toning) and I see no dulling of the highlights at the normal development time (2-3 minutes). I'm now a devotee of the ancient god Orthazite. I'm starting a church. Already designed vestments. . .
