Outdated HIE

Aloha, how long does HIE last, freezer kept? Couple of years out of date be ok? I have some rolls Languishing in the deep freeze, and since the weather's been sweet in Hawaii, I thought I'd load some. I think its from 03 or 05.

Hi,
Your HIE should be OK if it has been kept in a freezer and I have used stock outdated and kept this way without any problems. I would recommend using it up PDQ though once taken out of the freezer and do not leave it hanging around in the camera after it has been exposed - develop it straight away. Also bracket say 1 stop either way and print up the most suitable neg.

I've still got a long roll of that film in 70mm far older than yours is, and it was working last year, no adjustment needed. I'd be surprised if you would have any trouble with it.

Have fun - it is a great film and such a pity that Kodak have given it the slingers :-( We have about 20 cassettes stashed away in the freezer and when that's gone I don't know what we shall use.

As long as the felt on the cassettes has not been hit with light, you should be fine.

It is a great film. The 70mm version was made for aerial, but was the same.

Has anyone compared it with the 2475 recording film that also has gone out the window? I used that too, developed it exactly the same. I've wondered whether they might have been the same film sensitized differently.

This is probably a sign of my level of housekeeping, but I discovered a roll of HIE that's at least 15 years out of date in my freezer.

Loaded and unloaded in total darkness...is a regular 25a red filter OK for use with this film?

I have shot HIE with a Cokin #3 Red, which I understand is pretty close to a 25a. The results were not too bad, if not stunning. With this filter you get just the beginning of the IR effect. It's much more dramatic with an R72. I've still got two rolls in my freezer. I suppose I should actually get out and shoot it. (I've been shooting Maco Aura and SFX lately... saving the HIE for that perfect day.)

What a find. Bracket, bracket ,bracket & stick with the 25a filter. You may get a printable result but don't count on it. Would'nt it be great to be able to reply at some future date " Don't talk to me about using out of date film - I once got shots on a 15 year old film". You'll be such a hit with all the girls!

Most people seem to like the max infrared effect. I think that it is almost more effective if it is less obvious. You know, where someone can't look at it and say "Oh, another infrared picture!"
