A request from a family member for a tray that could be used to capture a sample for an experiment caused me to dig out a Paterson 5X7 tray that I was not otherwise using. BUT the question came out that this experiment should have the tray washed in the dishwasher each time to prevent cross contamination of the sample.

SO I hope you will indulge me when I ask has anyone ever had occasion to wash a Patterson tray in the dishwasher repeatedly and will they stand up to such abuse. the substance being tested (a Dogs urine with the wrong Ph) is not a concern as it is milder than a lot of the photochemicals that might be used in the tray normally..

2 reasons things die in dishwashers:
- The detergents
- The heat

I don't think you have to worrry about the detergents, they're a lot tamer than industrial kitchen dishwasher chemicals, and tamer still then most photo chemicals (both acid and alkali).
The heat may be a problem, depending on how hot your dishwasher gets, but they don't tend to go much above 80C on the most intense cycle, mine washes down at 40C on 'eco' setting, and trays definitely handle that.

If in doubt, sacrifice one and see?

food that has sat for a couple of hours forms its own poison that is vastly worse than anything dog urine could contain.

Just wash the trays in dishwater and don't sweat it. They don't soak up the chemical, simple washing will handle it.

My Paterson trays have stood up to the test o time,25 years. I wash them in dishwasher many times.

They are safe to wash in the machine, just don't use heat to dry them, take them out when the cycle is complete or turn off heated dry.

You guys wash your trays? But, I use that layer of silver on the bottom of my dev tray as a badge of honour!

Just line your tray w/ a cut down garbage bag, and tape the edges to the top of the tray. Easier to get the specimen out (or specidog I guess), and no need to wash anything up later. I'm real big on not doing any extra work that is avoidable. We have the same scheme for our cat box. Place a bit of cardboard in the bottom, place the cut down garbage bag over it, pour in the litter, and never have to scrub the litter box again. Makes getting the yucky litter out later a breeze (and often you pray for one after Sissy's been in there).

thanks guys, Our pup has crystals in his urine so we are supposed to monitor the Ph while we try different foods. Doggies can't be asked to do this business in a bottle so we have to catch the urine on teh fly, hence the desire to have a low wide container. We may have to collect a sample for culturing so the container needs to be able to be sterilized, hence the desire to use the dishwasher on sani mode. Sounds like the thought of using the tray may be on the edge of what the plastic will stand for. may have to break out some Pyrex bake ware.

How about just disposable plastic cups on the end of a broompole? I'm pretty sure I sure the Mythbusters or someone similar doing this. When you're out walking him you can just sneak up behind and put the cup where he's aiming, easier than a tray (unless you can train him to use the tray), and a lot less chance of your hands getting peed on...

We had to get a urine sample from one of dogs once, and it was not easy. She did not like us putting trays under her (foil basting trays). Eventually, my mother got a cheap plastic ladle from a dollar store and was able to quickly swing it under the dog before she could stop.
