ORWO N75

I know this film has been talked about here in a few places, but there wasn't a thread just about it. This is the film that replaced N74+ earlier this year. Filmotec claim the biggest change is better anti-halation. However, the spectral sensitivity is quite different from N74+ so I think they've done a bit more than that. On RFF someone kindly shared the spec PDF, which ORWO have not posted anywhere.

I recently ordered 100 ft of it and finally got around to loading, shooting, developing, and scanning my first roll from it. Here are a couple of shots in XTOL stock for 8.5 mins @ 20C.

So far I really like this film. It has a definite "Kodak" look to me. A bit like Double-X, a bit like Tri-X. It's an ISO 320 film, but I am pretty sure that I would have had excellent results at the same dev times at EI640 or possibly EI800. There is still buckets of shadow detail at 320.

I shoot tons of UN54+. It's nice film. The grain is very different than Plus-X but the tonality is very similar. If you were ever a Plus-X user this will be familiar territory. I like it best in D-76 1:1.

I'm very curious about this new N75. I use N74+ as my EI400 film as of recently and I still have a fair amount left but I'd be very curious to see side-by-side comparisons between N74+ and N75. The ISO being lowered to 320 is probably realistic as I think N74+ is probably closer to 320 as well but I'm very curious about the other differences.

I'm just a little late to the film photography game to have tried plus-x, I did buy some darkroom stuff that came with some really old hand rolled plus x, but I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

I typically use Ansco 17, which is very similar to D76, so hopefully it'll turn out well.

You're in for a treat. Plus-X is beautiful film. Don't wait too long, though; For whatever reason (maybe just bad luck) I've found that Plus-X tends to defy the conventional wisdom of slower films aging gracefully. I find expired Plus-X more prone to age-related fog than other expired films of the same speed.

I can't compare side-by-side but from looking at scans on Flickr I'd say that N75 appears to have a bit different tonality while maintaining the same grain shape and size and having similar contrast. I would guess the spectral sensitivity change is most responsible for the difference.

Not enough to judge yet, but I was surprised that my first roll of N75 has reverted to the Pre-keycode edge pint. Just ORWO c3 49 on one edge and a 6 dist footage number on the other. Both arranged to read right from the Emulsion side. (Which is actually sane if one were to be editing the film)

Looking at the filmotec website for these two camera films ( http://www.filmotec.de/?cat=23&lang=en&lang=en ) , it's clear they are intended to be used as motion picture films...not a problem - that's where small format photography all began after all - but jeeez, the smallest sized roll is 30.5 meters...

Are you finding N75 in individual 135 format cassettes ?

Nope, it's motion picture film, so I bulk loaded it. I'm sure you'll shortly be able to get it from someone on eBay bulk loaded if that's what you are looking for.

No surprise, as nearly all their films were/are directed at the cine-world. That was their niche from the start, with some cashcow added for speed-trap photography and some scientific stuff. Just these days they added a new film aimed at a different institutional market, competing though with Agfa, reflecting their product development of the last years.
