Only got 4 shots on a 36 exp roll?

I was shooting a roll today with my Dynax 7 and after taking my 4th shot on the roll, the camera auto rewound the roll. Has that happened to anyone else before? Will be developing film tomorrow so I will see what is up with the roll then I suppose.

I don't think it is the camera because I ran a new roll after and it has been fine so far, still only partially through at 14 exposures though.

If anyone was wondering it was Freestyle's Arista Premium 400.

I have an Elan 7ne that does that occasionally. So far only on bulk loaded rolls though.

I don't see how that could be the film unless it only contained 4 shots. Things happen though.

Do you have the camera set for automatic rewind at end of roll? If so you can change this setting, which may prevent the issue from happening again. I've not had this issue with either of my 7's, but use manual rewind only.

Don't forget that a D7 can start in the middle of a roll so before you soup the film, set the camera to restart the roll at frame 6, reinsert the roll and see if you can make it through to the end.

I don't know this camera, but does it sense the end of the roll by increased tension in the film? If so, perhaps this particular roll had some mechanical irregularity that tightened the film enough to trip the end-of-film sensor.

I agree with DWThomas. It appears that there was a jam of some description. I agree with Polyglot above. Use the function on your 7 to re-load your film from frame 6 and see how you go. While I have never had the issue on my 7, it did happen once on my old 7000i. Again, I put it down to some form of jam, which appears to have never happened since.

This is obviously a highly sophisticated camera. Its internal processor can sense when one is taking the same old crap again and cuts you off by rewinding the film. Try re-booting the camera. Steel-toed boots suggested...

That's it. Silly him, should have been using a pinhole......

An over-tensioned, sticky film spool in cassette can trigger a precautionary rewind in many auto-drive cameras. It's happened to me with the EOS 5 and EOS 1N. It's best to tap-tap-tap a canister on the table and pull out/rewind in a section of leader to free up the spooled film. Very, very important if the film has been in cold storage for a while.

What they said about tension, or, possibly, a battery that is just starting to get weak?

Not familiar with your camera, but some autowinders will rewind the film as a precaution when the battery goes low.

Thanks all, I'll have to remember that for next time. I set up the Dynax 7 to rewind all the way, and not leave the leader out which I just set it up to do from now on. I can only assume what happened is as described, but it is a bit odd since it wasn't in cold storage, just in one of my drawers since my room is always at a pretty cool temperature.

It happened to me many times with my previous contax 167 mt. It only was with Fuji Reala. I could shot about 20 frames out of 36....
