Yes - I kind of have to admit it: I have the gene for collecting.

I just got my 5th Gandolfi, and I am totally in love with it.

I think it is similat to the one Ole has, bu tI am not totally sure.

the latest is a black laquered 5x7 Gandolfi, with a 250mm Heliar and 4 extra front plates.

I've been wanting a camera in this size for some time, as I can enlarge 13x18 cm films, but not 8x10.
And because I'd like to go out more and use the camera in the nature without breaking my neck (not having a car...)

in short, I now have

half plate stereo Gandolfi
Full plate Gandolfi
5x7 Gandolfi traditional
8x10 Gandolfi Traditional
12x16 huge Gandolfi

(I also must admit, that I would like the 4x5 version too...)

collector?
maybe a collector wannabe, but a happy one.

For what it's worth I have a Gandolfi 5x7 made by the Gandolfi Bros
Mark

So now its time for some Gandolfi socialism: I have none so youll send the latest on and the 250mm Heliar to me :D
Con gratulations Emil. Im looking forward to see results from it and maybe see it life some day at Vrå. How's the Bergheil doing by the way?
Kind regards

One of the curious byways of the English education system is the emphasis put on learning the proper collective nouns for groups of the same thing. An 'exultation' of larks, a 'bevy' of otters, a 'gaggle' of geese. Harold Macmillan once famously described a gathering of former prime ministers as a 'Lakh of principles'.

So, what, I wonder, is the collective noun for Gandolfis?

Lack of money
Or perhaps
Lack of lenses

Wouldn't that just be "G"andolfi "A"quisition "S"yndrome?
Offcource it also could be "Lack of Sense" but then again not when it comes to Emil
Kind regards

well - I see it as a family...
Claus stensgaard has a Gandolfi Variant, and we're talking about making a nice family portrait, where the Variant has to be the orphant....

Søren: lack of money: indeed!
Lack of lenses... not by a long shot..

..and the Bergheil is doinv VERY well. A perfect little camera. Easy to use, and very very light. Go for it.

Since most Gandolfis were made by the brothers, how about "a brotherhood of Gandolfis"?

Anyway it's "a glass of lenses".

How about an "extension of Gandolfis" so you could have a double or triple extension?

Can't do a quintuple extension for you Emil, so you'll have to have your own "tradition of Gandolfis" I think.

Timing

Emil:

When you need to time long exposures, is this how you keep track:

(said out loud) "One Gandolfi.. Two Gandolfis.. Three Gandolfis.. Four Gandolfis.. Five Gandolfis......."?

:smile::wink:

Hi Gandolfi
Your camera looks in very good condition, I have the same model. Yours probably dates from the 50s, it has no clips on the front standard. Very nice to own and use. Alex

Forgot to add, a collection of Gandolfi owners of course are Gandolfios.
Alex

Or Gandolfistas. Or Gandolfini, or perhaps Gandolficionados.

Which of course set me wondering whether the plural of "Gandolfi" is Gandolfe, Gandolfie or Gandolfii...

it took some time, but now I did it AGAIN....

I must have GAS = "G"andolfi "A"quisition "S"yndrome

family number 6 is now on it's way..

A beautiful little 4x5.

what next....

Emil

Gandolfi's of course are great cameras but.......I'm very much a 'swing and shift' fan - any thoughts on differences here and whether you feel that it's not much of an issue for your kind of photogaphy?

hi Andrew-

I love my gandolfi's for a simple reason.
I am possibly a snob.... so I like the craftmanship behing the camera - all hand made, and clearly with "love".... (I have seen a Deardorf... And I would never trade... even though I think the Deardorf can a lot of "fancy" stuff..) - it is easy to use - it is sturdy, and especially the 4x5 and the 5x7 are quite light. Easy to carry around..

(the 8x10 is surprisingly heavy, but that's ok, as I normally use it in my studio..)

I am not a tilt/shift kind of photographer. I seldom need it, as my subjects are mostly portraits, nudes and still life's..

And my experience is, that many people that claim they are "afraid" of sitting in front of a camera, relaxes as son as they see the Gansolfi's

The cameras have a possibility to tilt/ship a little with the backs, and that's enough for me.

The biggest "problem" with the two smallest camera are in fact the size of their front plates...
It makes it rather limited in what lenses I can play with...

(But the 8x10 has a nice size front plate, and as I also have a 4x5 reducing back for that, I can use this if needed....)

Should I need a camera with the tilt/shift possibillity, then I just use my Sinar (4x5 and 5x7). I am fortunate: I have more cameras than I can use in my life time.....
