no... ?

EDIT: just checked (didn't know that store..)

A Variant (doesn't look bad at all, but I think I'll stick to the "real" ones.....

Just kidding, you don't need to buy it! :D It's in the Large Format/Panoramic list, under Cameras, fourth one from the end. But that I am not versed in the variations, maybe it is the MDF version?

Ah, I see - that's why it has been sitting there for a while, maybe.

So is it really that you like a camera with your name one it?

Interested readers want to know!

Steve

Oh Really--!!

no... ?

I happen to own one of those "Variants" and they take exceptional photo's not to mention a lens up to 480mm without extensions.......so there.....grin.

Good for you!
I dont question for a moment, that the Variants are quality cameras! They are Gandolfi's, after all...

BUT - as said before, I like the craftmanship behind the "old" ones - a (used to be) friend of mine had a Variant: that was surprisingly heavy, and frankly, I don't really like the design...

Apart from this; I have limited funds.. I can't have all.....

You should be using these cameras, they were not meant to collect dust.

???????

but I USE these cameras all the time! Of course I do - it's like owing some Rolls royse's.. you have to drive them...

...and now it is a septet....

Just bought a beautiful old little quarter plate Gandolfi from before the twenties...

Nice addition to my addiction...

It's a nice one to add to the collection and as we discussed elsewhere seems rare although in Gandolfi's adverts in the 1920's. You did well.

Seem to be collecting Hopughton cameras like your collectiong Gandolfi's except there's more variety in terms of type of camera :D

One of the curious byways of the English education system is the emphasis put on learning the proper collective nouns for groups of the same thing. An 'exultation' of larks, a 'bevy' of otters, a 'gaggle' of geese. Harold Macmillan once famously described a gathering of former prime ministers as a 'Lakh of principles'.

So, what, I wonder, is the collective noun for Gandolfis?

I don't know, I'd be happy with just one (Gandolfi). Over here we call them "the English Deardorff".

yes - I think I am finally accepting my collectors gene...

I only want different models though.. enough left to satisfy my gene....

So - I got an offer to buy some special items for mu Gandolfi 5x4:

An old type back with 6 beautiful double cassettes for glass negatives...

A custom made roll film adapter for 6x9 + the roll film holder.

Apparently the roll film adapter is the only excisting one in the world - custom made.

All this made in Cuba mahogany....

It belonged with a camera - lenses, all made as a set. I would have preferred the whole thing collected as a whole, but given, that the seller had to sell off some of it, I decided to buy it...

I might be able to buy the camera from the original set at some later stage (So nice as a whole set), but time will tell..

Besutiful craftmanship!!!

Excellent Emil, and thanks for sharing.

I'm in the middle of testoring another two British filed cameras and that Roll film back dapter looks interesting, I'd not thoght of that approach. I have made adapters for RF backs and also modern 5x4 film holders in the past but that's more in keeping.

Beautiful camera. When I read the title of the thread, I thought it was a new way to time pinhole photo exposures, like 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi....

It might be...:whistling:

...couldn't have gone to a more perfect home.

Octet...

I just inherited a nice "modern" Gandolfi Variant 4x5 with a really nice Rodenstock Jmagon with all the stuff today.

I have never been looking out for a Variant, but it is a nice addition to my flock..

Image later..

It's a terrible obsession Emil. I suggest acupuncture, I'm very handy with a hammer and nails :D

I've accidentally gone down the Houghton route , and have about the same number - however there's far more options  Field cameras, SLRs, Rangefinder . . . .
