Omega d5xl counterbalance springs

Are the springs supposed to be extremely hard to pull out of their shell, at least when pulling them by hand? I'm trying to hook them onto the things at the top of column but they won't budge at all. Also not sure if that's how the plate is supposed to be screwed on the column. It came separately.

edit: ok I realize now I have the plate upside down

No, the springs still refuse to move.

I have access to a d5xl frame this evening. I'll try to see if I can pull a spring (though I'm leery of removing it from it's "hook").

I was able to pull a spring out by hand.

My guess that yours are either rusted or stuck by some dried up lubricant. I'd try some brake cleaner first and, if that did not help, a spray penetrant like PB Blaster.

Can you remove the coiled springs so that you can clean and lubricate them?

I guess mine is a D6. But the springs pull out with moderate force (but they are already extended to may be easier) so I'd guess either yours are stuck or you aren't pulling hard enough. Yours look in decent shape so maybe once you get them to budge they'll be more cooperative.

Those things are just silly window sash balance springs! But they did choose an excellent brand of them which lasts for decades, seemingly.
