Y’all, I am so deep into this camera and making progress, but a little stumped on this jammed curtain.

So far I have fixed the following issues:
- Winding was jammed but all the gearing looked good. Removed the winding stack and found the bearings out of place and short two. Replaced the bearings and the winding isn’t jammed.
- Mirror box was in a weird state, removed it, cleaned it, working.
- The little hook at the end of the mirror charging lever was bent out of shape and preventing the shutter release from triggering.

Now I have everything together, mirror box goes in, winding advances, shutter release triggers, the second curtain (rear curtain) releases, the front curtain? Jammed.

I realized I don’t know if i’ve seen that curtain move and I’m not sure how to charge or release it manually. Hoping someone can give me some advice.

Thanks!

Well I can’t offer any advice on repair, only my experience trying to get my OM2s shutter repaired. I had used it, then put it away for a year or more. Ran a roll of film through it and was only getting half a frame per shot- a shutter problem. I sent it off the Jon Hermanson the OM guru in the States. He told me it was not worth repairing, whatever that means exactly. He said it was the result of shock, but I don’t believe that to be true because I know I didn’t drop it or handle it roughly. So I bought another functioning one for less than even the cost of a CLA from Mr. Hermanson. Best of luck in your repair- please let us know if you have success.

Oh yeah, no way this is worth the work I’m putting into it 🤣. But I’m having a lot of fun doing it.

can you grasp the 1st curtain and move it back into the film aperture and IF you can move it,
will it then snap back to the jammed position?

You had the mirror box out of the camera. An SLR uses the mirror to release the first curtain
and it could be a lever that's not engaging or the curtain hasn't actually been latched in the cocked position

Great timing! I’ve gone… deeper.

With the shutter out I’m able to see that, something is out of whack! As far as I know with the OM shutters the way it should work is that there’s this cam at the bottom that charges the shutter.

When this is turned it’s connected to a gear that charges the 2nd curtain. It has a little point that pushes on a second gear that charges the 1st shutter.

With this shutter, the first curtain is never charged. It’s like the pin or gears are out of place.

I might actually know what to do (thanks OM-1 Service Manual).

I think that if I charge curtain 2, locking it in place, I can disengage the curtain rod from the gear. Then reset the gear back to alignment with curtain 1’s gear. Reengage curtain 2s curtain rod and done?

Hey thought I would update, I did exactly above, and while extremely fiddly and the curtains wanted to come out when replacing the shutter block and it took many tries, it worked!

However (there’s always a however), something is wrong with the shutter speed brushes or wiring and the camera fires at 1/1000-1/500 at all electronic speeds.

This is covered in the repair manual, but I haven’t had the heart to dig in and fix it after having done all the soldering to get the camera back together 🤣
