Hello folks,

I've recently experienced some weird issues with my Olympus Mju-II. It will start up normally (lens buzz included) and display the relevant information on the display and in the viewfinder. However when I try to take a picture the camera will only intermittently fire. I've tried to pin down in which situations it fires and which it doesn't, but I haven't been able to find any pattern, apart from that it will usually fire several times in a row if you don't move the camera between presses of the shutter button.

Does anybody know what could be wrong?

Do you get a focus confirmation while pressing the release?

I have one of these but unfortunately for you I haven't had your problem. I can only think of a possible issue such as needing a fresh battery. There might be enough power to display the information but not enough to fire the shutter except for a few short bursts. If it then fires again on the first press after an interval it might be that the battery recovers enough to fire a few times and is then drained again.

If you are saying that it will fire every time as long as the camera isn't moved then that suggests another cause such as movement of the
camera causes the battery to lose contact. Pure speculation on my part however

I take it that on start up there is no sign indicating that the battery needs replacing? If you have a spare fresh battery it is worth replacing the old one to see if that cures the problem. I hope some others can suggest an answer.

The only time I have problems with mine is when I have inadvertently moved the sliding door from the fully open position. It is fairly easy to move it out of the detent, so maybe the same thing is happening with yours.

Try cleaning the battery contacts and a new (fully charged) battery. You can also measure the voltage in your present battery to see how low it is.
This would be the first thing I would try. The second thing would be getting me another Mju-II.

I think I still have an extra one with a battery door that won't close. You can have it if you want and switch the battery doors?

(I do love the Mju-II for its excellent light meter and very good lens - especially for B&W shooting).

Plain battery voltage metering is a bad indicator for the resting charge.
Battery meters measure voltage under under a certain load applied on the battery.

If you're willing to part with it, I'd be very happy. I'll try with a new battery first though.

Some excellent ideas here for troubleshooting. The Stylus (µ outside the US) is a great camera and well worth the effort to get it back up and running. Although the family refers to mine as "the cheap camera for taking pictures of people" the Stylus has taken some truly beautiful shots. The images are razor sharp and the exposure is spot on every time, with slide film (both the original 3.5 and the later 2.8). I have never had cause to compare it unfavorably to any of my Pen or OM lenses.

On another topic... TheToadMen, how do you like that Clack? I've recently been bitten by the 6x9 bug and was thinking of adding one of those to my Bessa I and Medalist. Obviously, it could only be used for print film.

After some further investigation it would seem as if it has issues focusing. I misinterpreted the focus confirmation led earlier and it consistently displays "no focus" (i.e. flashing green led) when it refuses to shoot, and displays successful focus when it does shoot.
