hi all..



sitting here - in doubt on what to do..
A guy just sent me the attch images.. of TWO old GANDOLFI's, that he wants me to buy!

Am I lucky or am I stupid (having one already - but newer...)

I am not too shure about the price yet, but I am guessing about 900$ for both..
the first looks like a 18x18 and the other like a 8x10....

feel free to feel envy!

I think900, yes.. is that expensive or a steal.. (or something in between...)

That depends a little on the state of the cameras. And whether they come with plate holders.

I'm guessing they are both "plate" sizes - a full plate and some banquet size? Anyway the use non-standard plate holder types, but Gandolfi (not you, but Eddie Hill) still knows how to make them. Two (new) plate holders for each camera I guess would cost about - $900?

The price is low for Gandolfis, but high for rear focus plate cameras. Add enough "extras" to make them usable, and it's a steal. No extras, and they're expensive display items (although nice display items tend to be a lot more expensive than great user cameras).

They do seem to be in great shape, but i'm with Ole, on saying that 900$ is steep for user cameras if there are no plate holers with them...

Has anyone here made their own holders? I've taken a standard 8x10 film one apart to look and put it back together and it doesn't seem that it would be all that hard.

Maybe I'm over-confident about my skills, which are advanced amateur at best.

UPDATE:

the sizes of theese cameras are:

the first is a 12x16cm with a Ross (ross 8x5.0 .a doublet (?)) lens
NO cassette..

the second is a 21,5x16.5 cm with a tessar 4.5 21cm lens

there are three cassettes, but unfortunately not Gandolfi's.. the seller suggest that the cassettes (w.allen (manufactor)maidenhead) can be made to fit with a wood chisel (they seem a little thick as is..)

the man who bought these in the first place bought them at an auction, as the auction nr's are still on the items..(he's now dead, so the widow is trying to sell theese)

the price is 950$ for both...

These cameras are "users", judging by the assorted small scratches. As such they command a lower price than the "shelf queens" which are purely display items - but it is even more important to have holders. It doesn't really matter if the holders are for plates or film, something can always be worked out as long as the holders fit or can be made to fit the camera.

Check with http://www.gandolficameras.com/ how much a plate holder would cost - or the cost for modifying a holder to fit, or making a "modrn" back to fit the cameras.

Do you know this person? If not, I'd be very cautious. Some people pick recent winners or runner-ups on eBay and send scam emails offering similar items at reduced prices. The story about the widow trying to sell them would make me even more skeptical.

Among other things, I've been offered incredible deals on a new-in-box, the original box mind you, 8x20 Korona Banquet Camera shortly after I won one on eBay. As I inquired further I discovered that yes, it came with an international 2-year warrantly and included the optional 8x20 digital scanning back. Not only that, but when I asked if other new units were available I was told I could buy up to 10 NIB cameras at a steep discount. Of course, a Western Union wire transfer was the preferred method of payment. :rolleyes:

thanks for the heads up, but in this case the guy is legit!

He is actually the Leader of the Museum of Photography here in DK, and he was trained as a photographer at the now deceased guy..

He knows the widow well, and is just trying to help her realize some old stuff..

(he also had a commission on a beautiful Makiflex, but sold it just before I became aware of it...)
he just mailed me, that he will bring me the cameras in person next week, for me to jugde..

(I've known him for 20 years..)

now: WHYisn't the museum buying any of these?
lack of funds. pure and simple. they almost exclusevly rely on donations..
But it is a nice museum, with a lot of great stuff..
