Cuba was an adventure. I went without my film cameras, instead using my phone. My wife appreciated that, especially in Old Havana. Why? It was pretty intense, and one did not want to hang in one spot for very long, fiddling with camera, and exposure settings. It would just attract too much attention. The hustlers see $$. So, we had to keep on the move to get away from them. Standing was almost always next to a large, pile of rotting garbage, and other smelly things. Walking in Havana, one has to keep one eye down on the pavement so not to step on anything from garbage to human bodily waste, and animal corpses, and the other eye on photo ops/dodging hustlers... The chap in the photo was rummaging through the bins. A block down were a group of children playing soccer, on the sidewalk, with a ball with no air...We were only in Old Havana for two hours. That was enough! We were exhausted when we got back to the hotel (out of Old Havana). That's another story!

No film camera, oh no!
Due to cultural ties (Spain) I've had quite some interest in Cuba but has always been a non-easy trip to ever plan or do. However, I find its anachronistic and stuck in time character to be an interesting subject to shoot on film.
There is a very heavy history and political reason as to the hardships they are having, supposedly due to the centralised and policing of the state it's one of the safest latin american countries.
How it is for Canadians to visit? One big reason as to not visit being an european is losing ESTA eligibility. Then of course there is the ethics of visiting a country in heavy hardship. Interestingly, I've been seeing a lot of film work from US photographers that visited the island.

No camera because this was a trip to spend quality time with my wife.
Canadians are their number one source of visitors. I saw no Americans. Some Russians. The resort we were at was all Canadians, with the majority coming from the province of Quebec... I heard zero English, except from one other couple, who was from Toronto. It's easy for us to go there, even though there is no direct flight from Vancouver. Only from Toronto or Quebec City. Cuba needs tourism more than ever.
What is ESTA?

ESTA is the US visa waiver program which after some search I see does not apply for Canadians. As a citizen of a country under ESTA eligibility, Visiting Cuba would void this visa waiver. And so, visas are then required to enter and visit the US.

As of the US photographers, what I mention is the workshop series @filmschoolroadtrip (in instagram) who are organising Cuba 1-2 a year and the work posted afterwards is very interesting.

My current maritial status prioritises photography and I've returned from a SE Asia trip hauling a P645n, Automation is great and very convenient for street shooting. But also know that cameras bring attention, and I do actually find film challenging in tropical city conditions.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip. Pity you did not have time for a few film pictures. It's a fabulous visual treat.

I'm quite happy that I didn't bring along my cameras, actually. If I had gone alone, I wouldn't have hesitated!
@Kodachromeguy your photos are dated 2017. I assume that is when you were there? It's changed quite a bit (for the worse) since then, according to a multi-time visitor I chatted with on the plane coming home... Crime has also gone up. That is another reason why I hesitated to bring along any gear. It was quite tiring trying to escape all the hustlers!

Given a choice between visiting one of the two authoritarian third world countries, Cuba is the more interesting of the two.

Done both.

@Cubao if the film advance grip is replaced with the hand crank, it's not too loud. With the film advance grip, it's LOUD! 😱

I haven't been to Havana since New Year's eve 1958 where I had to leave Fredo after giving him a brotherly kiss. He just wasn't keen to leave with me on the aeroplane 😎

I was in Havana in Jan. 2017. I'm sorry to hear that conditions have deteriorated - that is grim.

We felt no obvious crime vibes then. That was a stark contrast to many US cities.

I am thinking so as well! Been heading to Asia for the last couple years and no set plan for any trip west across the Atlantic.

As of the P645n, it's the second tropical long trip I take with a medium format. Used the 35mm ultrawide which made it quite P&S. A smaller quieter 35mm camera would do wonders in those streets, but I have a thing for medium format to that extent...
Last year had a Fuji 6x9 but oh that does need film and reloading so often.
Anyways many parts of (South East, East) asia are very Safe, photographically interesting and actually I seemed to be just some tourist with a huge camera which bothered no one. But as Andrew used, the phones are just great and IMO the best P&S tool.

Nice blog posts. There was a promising era circa 2015 when Obama lifted a lot of policies, but it didn't last long. Then the situation deteriorated, I understand quite a bit so due to the pandemic.

...due to pandemic and hurricanes... Cuba prioritised tour industry, over basic services, too. Now the people are paying the price for that.

So sad, if the US would open up to Cuba both countries would benefit.

Such poverty is hard to understand without seeing first hand. I remember visiting Brazil in the 90's, seeing some of the areas near Sao Paulo. My Goodness. Just reminds me how freaking lucky I am.

Anyway, I at least would want a plastic film camera.

Can you buy film in shops in Cuba? (Other than the ones that cater to the Canadian hyper-wealthy)

@mshchem I heard that the remaining photo stores closed after Covid. If I could find film there, it probably has an expiry date of January 1, 1959...

In 2017, I was amazed how few commercial and common goods of any sort were available in Cuba. Film? I did not even see toothpaste or soap or socks.

It's unfathomable that we continue to .......Wait I'm drifting into political arena.

It's just heartbreaking. The heavenly beings are unhappy with our behavior towards our fellow humankind. And that's for sure and certain!

This was day one. I'm not a beach person, but this is my kind of weather! I sat, under my beach brolly, composing images in my mind. A fun exercise.
