The responses to the earlier query about studying with a master printer in London were so interesting that I would like to ask the same question: who would be a good person to study advanced black and white printing with in California (or anywhere in the Western US)?

i am not sure where Alan Ross is hanging out these days, but he is terrific. Gives workshops and in his spare time he prints some of Ansel Adams prints for the Yoesmite series.

You also might try to find Bob Kolbrener, he is in the carmel area.

both of these fellows have been assistant for Ansel Adams, which only means they know how to print and i have seen their work up close and personal.

I recommend a photographer in Pasadena named Per Volquartz that gives darkroom instruction.

Jon

Thanks -- I was going to look up his last name as an recoomendation, also.

Per Volquartz is an accomplished, knowledgeable photographer. He is also one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I spent a week in one of his large format workshops and it completely inspired me in many aspects of my photography. We spent a day on darkroom techniques and I saw a few of his prints….beautiful, amazing work. I hope to attend one of his darkroom workshops soon.

Best regards,

Bob

Also Lynn Radeka in Los Angeles. His uses masking techniques a lot and his prints are amazing.

Another nod to Per...one of the most generous people you will ever meet.

When I hear someone say "study with" I think of up rooting ones self and actually working with the person for a year or more.

When you say study with, are you saying take a quicky workshop, or more than that? Study takes time and a hell of a lot of it. A workshop might give you some pointers and maybe a few tricks but you will not get the full breadth of a person's experience and knowledge in a weekend.

All of the people mentioned are giving workshops. I am a bit confused by the question.

There's also Chris Honeysett (http://www.chrishoneysett.com) who's local to SF and still offers private silver-based workshops. I have seen his work and spoken to him, but not taken any workshops.

What you learn depends so much on the mix of personalities and balancing the topics with what you already know.

Mark, seeing that there are very few printers working on a daily basis in a commercial sense, I think it's going to be hard to find someone to apprentice with for any length of time. I have a short list myself, but I doubt I would be able to spend more than a week with any of them.
