I'm seriously considering selling my 35mm collection of cameras, lenses etc, apart from a few lenses which I'll come to later.

Thinking of just sticking with my old Yashica D, Nettar and a tripod for a more controlled style of photography.

But...........I now need to whisper about the fate of the lenses I intend to keep, they might well find themselves on a Nikon, no problem there you might think, but it's a ...................(DSLR) a word which shouldn't be mentioned here .

Do I need to seek help

You're thinking about evolving in your photography. Nothing wrong with that. However, I "gave up" 35mm once, and now I've gone back (in addition to the roll film and "new stuff".) Knock yourself out.

The Nikon system is one of the best out there for bridging the two mediums together.

Aside from having a couple of great "D-something" bodies, I have an F100, FM3A and F3, they all play very nice together.

I suggest you do as I did three times before, and am about to do again, in the next few months, when I return home.

First, sort out EVERYTHING in neat piles according to brand. Nikons in one box, Rolleis in another box, whatevers in yet another. One brand, one box. Do not mix them. Don't leave anything out. The good, the bad, the ugly. In it all goes.

Next, pick out ONE KIT of the very best of what you have in each box. Put that aside. As it's the best, you can always sell it for top dollar in future, if you decide to do this, or you need the money. Don't bother to keep second best, third best or outright crappy stuff, it will take longer to sell anyway, or go for less, with more effort on your part. You will probably want to keep this kit in future anyway. So do it.

Do NOT dispose of anything Nikon, unless you happen have, as I do, three 28mm f/2.8 D lenses, two 35mm f/2 Dlenses and three f/2.8 180mm ED lenses. Don't ask, please. I have absolutely no idea how I acquired so many dupes and trips. Perhaps I put them too close to one another and they quietly multiplied in the night... OK, bad joke. In fact, I bought out the contents of two camera shops in country towns in Victoria (Australia) some years ago. The outdated films alone took me two years to sell off. Still heaps of stuff left. Next time, I will list it and sell it, I promise. Maybe.

Then put away the good kits. Remove the batteries, if long term storage is intended. Pack everything safely. If humidity is a problem in your area, don't put cameras or lenses in their (usually leather or vinyl) cases and leave them there. Those infernal internal spider webs (fungus) will leap to the fray when you turn your back.

Now forget about the boxed and stored gear, and just go and do your thing with the cameras you want to work with for now.

Believe me, you will thank me in future for this advice. I have learned all this at the cost of much sweat (and not a little blood).

Considering what little you will get for your 35mm gear, I would store it for while to determine if you really are the point you can move on without regrets. I tend to shoot all most exclusively MF and LF for a while, then will shoot 35mm for a while. Although I do shoot digital there are some subjects I still prefer 35mm film.

I'm w/ Paul. I *LOVE* taking the time, pouring over an MF composition (when there is time available). But much of what I see calls for fast work or lose it. There's a place for both & no need to joins those who found themselved having to repurchase a 35 - unless you want a different one.

Same advice here, don't give anything or sell, time goes fast, and in 5 years for instance you can regret and take years to assemble the same high quality set again,
I did both with Nikon and Leica gear and what remains is only desolation and self hate,

Cheers,

Renato

You started this thread because you have your doubts about selling it.

If you have the room then store it. As mentioned above, most 35mm gear doesn't sell for much and you may regret it later.

I always get a bit of a chuckle out of the "Don't sell it!" statements when it comes to selling gear with the idea that it might be re-purchased again down the road.

In 2011 I sold off most of my Leica gear at the end of a project, keeping just an M3 and a 50 which was fine for several years.

Then about this time last year I decided to start employing the camera system into more of my work again. So in less than 4 months I had built back up to a great system of three bodies and 4 lenses & it was pretty painless overall. That time frame included sending an M6TTL in to have a deep CLA and several customizations done.

The only other thing I would say in regards to selling gear is that it has been and will likely be a buyer's market for some time, at least in the U.S. So depending on what you have and how much you paid for it, the stuff either might not move very fast or will fetch very low prices.

hi sewin
enjoy whatever it is you are going to do !
one thing i did when i realized i wasn't going to get diddly-squat for
a silk screen studio and tv broadcast video camera---- i donated them all to a
>>> community art center <<<
now, others who wanted to dig that stuff, but had no $$ could enjoy
making tshirts, screen-art, videos &c ----
i have a whole bunch of 16x20 natural wood frames i am going to donate next.
CAN'T WAIT !

Of these three: Yashica D, Nettar and a tripod, do any of them need a nice CLA? If so, sell gear to fund that. And/or sell more gear for maybe upgrading those. three. (of course selling one of those three when you replace it. Sell two for one better, that's what I've been trying to do.

I have thoughts of dumping 35mm film gear, and sticking to MF only ... But then part of me goes, just keep it, the stuff is cheap... But if I sold it all, the $$ could go to more mf gear..

That's how I feel about my FF D****. I have an older crop body and my wife's mirrorless, but it would be nice to use the $ to upgrade to a 67II. hmm.
