So I'm off to Germany tomorrow for a work conference. I won't be there very long - less than 2 weeks, but I will be visiting 4 different cities, from north to south: Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, and Munich. I was just curious if anyone had recommendations for good film/paper/used camera shops to visit in these cities. Of course I'll be bringing enough film for myself, but I want to see if I can find things that are either impossible/hard to find/too expensive in Japan. Any photo exhibitions currently on would be good to know too.

Cologne is a master showcase of the destruction of a german city during the war by bombing and during re-building in the post-war years.

see this composite video and try to find anything of the old during your visit:

In spite of being one of the largest german cities, one still can reach everything by foot within the inner-city ring on the left bank.

Thanks guys - lots of great suggestions so far. The Museum Ludwig is already on my list.

@macfred: I'll probably end up taking that same shot while I'm in Cologne!

Hi Moose,
I remembered macfred mentioning a cemetery once and I found it:
Melaten-Friedhof Köln http://www.melatenfriedhof.de/

See: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Enjoy your stay!

By the list of your itineraries I suspect you're traveling by rail with the ICE? If so, maybe a short stop in Mannheim could make it onto your list. There's currently a Peter Gowland exhibition. Haven't seen it, nor do I know the photographer, just found it 'caus in Mannheim there are always interesting photography exhibitions:

Also Mannheim itself has its charme and worthwhile to walk through. An industrial city (Mercedes et al) with a grid layout similar to New York.

Cheers,

Thanks Bert - I'm already going there. In fact, that's why I'm going to Cologne! (Here's a partial list: Hamburg (Ohlsdorf Cemetery), Cologne (Melaten), Worms (Heiliger Sand), plus various cemeteries in Stuttgart and Munich. I'll probably also do a day trip to Salzburg, so that will include St. Sebastien's Cemetery and Petersfriedhof).

Believe it or not, I'm considering Mannheim, partly because I it looks like I have to switch trains there on my way to Stuttgart.

Peter Gowland one the great California nude photographers. .classy stuff never to be repeated...also born on my birthday! .

Bavaria and in particular Neuschwanstein. Said to be the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle. Also in Bavaria is Rothenburg known for its well preserved medieval town and town wall.

Not knowing an thing about camera shops in Munich but if you can, spend a day in the Deutsches Museum. I wandered in there once, not knowing what it was and walked out 8 hours later tripping over my jaw. Maybe it was because I didnt know what I was getting into or maybe it really is as stunning as I remember. I could spend three days there I think.

Both are beautiful - visited them the first time I went to Germany. I did think about returning again to shoot them both in black and white, but I decided to focus on new places this time around.

In Hamburg the Deichtorhallen: Haus der Photographie is an absolute must:

The current exhibition is of the best recent photography graduates:

Also, Flo Peters Gallery is usually worth a visit:

Finally, check out the Photography Now website and select the cities you are visiting. Here are the current exhibitions in Hamburg:

Have a great trip,

They also have a nice exhibition about photography, unfortunately currently closed for renovation.
In any case the Deutsches Museum is worth a visit if you are into science and technology. The mining department is my favorite.

Living in Munich I know some (surely not all). I do not want to post my opinion in public (regardless of good or bad) about the respective stores -
in particular, their prices vs market price. Send me a pm if you are interested.

One last comment from me: pity you are not in Berlin, you could have visited Fotoimpex. They are my go-to store for anything analog.

Maybe they will ship to your hotel?

Nice

The station is almost in the center of the city. You can get anywhere in the center by foot within one our (relaxed walking). The Zepyr Museum Block C 4.9 is about 15-20 minutes walk from the station.

A nice short tour would be to head for the "Wasserturm" (water tower) then into the "Planken" the core of the city and shopping mile. There are lots of little cafes and ice cream Parlours (tipp: "Eis Fontanella", one of the best there). On the way don't forget to get a "Brezel" (freshly baken Pretzels) from one of the little movable houses which sell them (a iconic Mannheim thing). Then you reach the Paradeplatz, tram central. Then you might head for the Zephyr Museum and after that back to the Station. Parallel to the "Planken" is the "Fressgasse" (munch-lane) you'll find all kinds of Halal food to-go there. Most of it quite good (even better food can be had in the area around H1/G2/I1 "little Istanbul").

Don't bother visiting the "Benz" house where Benz invented the Otto-Motor and the first automobile. It's very unspectacular. Basically a metal plate on the outside wall of a house.

If you have more time (like a whole day) the Luisenpark and telecommunication tower is worth a visit. In the park you actually can pet fish. If weather is bad: Technik-Museum and Planetarium (not good walking distance from central station, so taking the tram is the ticket here). If you have a car or take a taxi, the industrial complexes around the harbour area offer some photo opportunities. You will probably then also enjoy the typical Mannheim smell: exhaust from the "Schokinag" a nearby Chocolate-Factory. Its a very distinct smell.

Worms is quite unspectacular. Typical example of a city which was almost completely destroyed in WWII and rebuilt with ugly architecture. The tourist destinations are the "Dom" (big cathedral) and the Stadtmauer (city wall) or what's left of it and the "Luther Denkmal" (Luther memorial). Ice cream parlor tip: Vannini (at the market place vis a vis "Haus zur Münze"). If time permits, theres a small strip at the river Rhine just unter the bridge with some restaurants. They have a Biergarten "Hagenbräu" where you get a good "halbes Hähnchen mit pommes" (half of a chicken with fries) and a sandbar serving cocktails (not sure if it's already open though). Ah, an the Hagen-Denkmal is also there (a statue of the mystical figure Hagen trowing the treasure in the river...).

Have a nice stay
