Issues with rollfilm backing paper did turn up back in the day....but we didn't have the www to discuss them. Also as film usage was orders of magnitude higher, consumers weren't freezing film as much....worldwide travel was less common so we people from temperate climates weren't taking films to the tropics. There certainly were warnings about keeping films cool when visiting tropical destinations.
The school teacher who taught me how to develop B&W film in 1986 warned me about freezing 120 films. I don't know that I've read about it in any books of the era but the main books I have probably wouldn't cover it....50s edition of the Ilford Manual of Photography and a 90s book on available light photography.
