Hi all,

I will be arriving in NJ this Friday night in advance of a week of work meetings next week. I have this weekend free to get my head into US Eastern time zone and get over the 24 hours travel to get there. On these business trips I very often take the train into NYC for a wander around. (Camera at the ready naturally!)

Anyone know of any special events, or other generally interesting things (From a photographic perspective) going on in NYC or NJ this weekend?

I will have a hire car so can travel within 5 or 6 hrs of Raritan, NJ.

Have the leaves started to turn yet?

Thanks
Glenn

No major Fall colors yet, you're a bit early for that.

I like to recommend a place you'd probably never expect to find within the confines of NYC, The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It's a beautiful salt marsh teeming with wildlife with the spires of Manhattan off in the distance as a backdrop Here's a website with some info. : http://www.nps.gov/gate/pphtml/planyourvisit.html

A long walk in Central Park is nearly always exceptionally rewarding. On autumn weekends it's teeming with people and with activities too varied to even try to enumerate. It's photographically rich in b&w or color, 'street' shots, urban scenic, abstract or representational. And...it's free! Have fun.

I've been meaning to get down to the Chris Jordan show at the Yossi Milo Gallery, which should be really interesting (even though the prints involve ink being ejaculated onto paper), and if you catch that, you'll be in the Chelsea gallery district, so you can catch a few others, and then be sure to swing up to the John Stevenson Gallery, which has a great collection of alt-process and gelatin silver prints. There are a few listings to see what's going on, but I usually just pick up _The Village Voice_ when I want to go gallery hopping and check the photo listings.

In addition to the above suggestions, right now there is an island designed by Robert Smithson floating on a barge around Manhattan. I've been hoping to get a shot of it from my apartment. If you google it, you should be able to find an approximate schedule.

I saw the Chris Jordan show a couple nights ago and was impressed. I really liked his work.

And of course, carry your camera at all times. I pretty much do, but I just had to zip between my office and home, because I forgot something, and on the way back, I passed by a line of 1950s automobiles parked alongside Grant's Tomb. No camera, and no time to run back for one, alas.

The "Feast" in Little Italy is going on, and that's next to Chinatown.
Dusk is good for either.
