You've just found the exact point that PE has been trying to make:

“The process of development goes through until all AgBr of a grain is reduced, as long as we do not stop the process before.”

Pictorial negatives are seldom, if ever, developed to completion. As PE stated, to do so would result in litho like results, and then fog.

Ed, PE, I just came back to this thread…

In the meantime I looked through all my photoscience textbooks and even approached a research photo-chemist. In my basic statement I was right; however, as you stated, I learned that in pictorial processes the development is stopped before the majority of crystals is developed to completion, due to reasons you stated above.
