Especially when it has a big red L on the end of it.

All this + a Polaroid Land Camera Model 80 - the Elan 7e which I already own = $2150.

Both are f4L's and are Image Stabilized. Can't wait to see some prints off that Elan 7e through these.

You can get rid of those obnoxious red rings with a Sharpie.

No, the fun thing to do is put those obnoxious red rings on cheap consumer lenses like the EF-S 18-55, 55-250, 75-300 and watch the "pros" (I has Rebel XT DSLR in full auto = I'm a professional photographer) gawk and stare at your sooper awsum gear

Don't worry it got me for a minute once we were out on a photowalk I saw the red ring on an old 24-70 f3.5-4.5 kit lens that came on the EOS 650, 700, 630 etc. had to do a double-take for a minute there. I know there's a 24-70 L lens but I remember it being a LOT bigger than the one I saw. Lol

I had an L lens for a few months once. We did not get along, Now I have a Nikon pro lens, Needless to say she is on her way out also. Now I am not in the arena for canon or nikon pro lenses. It feels good.

My L was the EOS 50mm f/1.2 (and yes, it did have Sharpie all over it. :D) Just recently sold it. It was a great lens, but I am switching to Nikon for digital.

Red dots are *far* better.... ;-)

L lenses are nice, but they're not magical. I recently came across this rich 18-year old photographer on Flickr who had probably every L lens canon currently makes (and showing off all of them). His photographs were painfully bad. I call it the equipment to skills ratio: the photographer should always be better than his tools.

I'm only 25 and I have my share of Canon L glass but I try not to "show it off". I do my best to put it all to good use :D

Who is this showoff 18 year old? (I've seen a few on there)

yeah, lenses don't make the photograph, the guy behind it does.

see my sig.

The Timothy O'Sullivan print of the Canyon de Chelley from a digital file on my wall was shot with whatever lens was available in 1873. I wonder if the red-ringed Great White Whale Lens in the original post can take such a magnificent photo.

I went through bunch of Ls and EOS3. Zooms and Primes. Glass is good, but 50L front is made with plastic parts hold by glue.
So, plastic nikon FG-20 and all metal Helios 81H (50/2) is great combo to get great pictures with good glass now for me.

Possibly, if you find a way to re-animate Tim.
If we're thinking of the same image, it was part of a survey, not specifically made to be art. Timothy O'Sullivan had a marvellous eye, didn't he?

Also, Tim's camera, were it still to exist, would be useable today.

I'm far more impressed by the content of a given photo - composition, creative concept, its emotive effect - than by the lens used.

I don't even know what these (in this thread) lenses are, and I don't need to know. By 1975~, lenses had become good enough mainly due to a) coatings, b) glass types, and c) new designs with the aid of computers to do the calculating that no matter what I wish to do photographically, the equipment will be the last item to limit me.

That is what I say in my signature. I am Sirius Glass because of all my Hasselblad lenses.

L glass is good, Minolta G, is good, pro level Nikon ED lens are good, Pentax LE lens are good, Konica lens are good. What you get with pro level glass is minimized distortion in zooms, pro build, and better coating. If can resolve 200 Lines/mm (Tmax 100) it is good for me

My 24-105 is my workhorse, is mounted about 95% of the time. Goes everywhere with me. I love my 17-40 on my Elan 7E, nice and wide. Kicked my 100-400 out as is just holding down my bag for me, didn't get worked out much, so it had to go.

OP, enjoy that kit, it will be fruitful for a long while.

all my lenses are better lenses than I am a photographer.

Rumour has it, Steve, that Hasselblad lenses are so good because they send more than 50% of the ones they receive from Zeiss after they have tested them are sentback. I don't know if this is true.

I see you've primered that lens on the left. What colour are you going to paint it?
