I picked up a bargain-grade chrome 250/5.6 Sonnar lens for my Hasselblad 500CM last year sometime from KEH. Did not use it much but finally went out yesterday and ran a few rolls of film thru and wow. Forgot what a great performer it can be. This was take from up in the east bay hills in the San Francisco area. The GGB is about 12 miles from where I took this. The detail of the bridge towers and cables in a 100% scan on the neg is breath-taking. And this is a crop.

If you have a Hassy 500 body and do not have this lens I recommend it. Only downside is the bayonet-50 for filters but whatever. KEH has one now for only $119. It's a no-brainer.

I know of a 180 CFL that is less than $400 and MINT!! Wondering if I like my $400 more than the lens though. I have so damn much stuff.

My go to commercial grab kit is 85mm f1.8 and 16-35mm and a Nikon D700.

The Hasselblad is either in the studio or when it leaves it goes flying doing aerial work.

I've thought about buying a chrome 250 to round off my kit 50 80 150, they are all cf lenses though. The only time I would use it is for wildlife, it would replace my 150 and 2x. The one extra stop would me nice.

These chrome 250mm do seem cheap for what they are. And B50 to screw adapters are not expensive.

Even An Soviet 250mm for kiev 88 is more than 250 dollars and I saw a polaroid shot of ansel with sonnar , it was sooo nice. Richard , I loved your picture and the light is so elegantly distributed , its just like ansel prints. I had a 250mm soviet and it was beest thing I have ever had , better than all my leicas. I was living a university dormitory near to an ottoman castle and one 4AM at the morning , I went there and build my best compositions with that lens. Still , they are in front of my eyes. May be one day I sell my everything and buy a Kiev 60 with 250mm.
Aha I was using velvia and one city morning shot from the hill was excellent. My nuclear engineer , than architect than graphic design graduate friend had been loved it , he started photography inspired from me and been the one of the best video artists of the world , check magnetmus at youtube , his name is ali mahmut demirel works with ritchie hawtin.

Which 2X are you using? I shot some of this scene with the 250 and a 2X. Will post if any are good...

I think 'love' IS the right word, I never had quite the same att`chment to any other camera.I use my 250 for close-up portraitsslightly out of focus becauseit and the 180mm are just too sharp for portraits.However, mine are CFs;don't know if that makes a difference.

I picked up a chrome 250mm from Hunt's Photo for almost nothing. I really didn't think I needed it, but for such a cheap price I bit the hook. I too, was pleasantly surprised at how nice this lens is. I then found a "like new" Komura" 2X tele-converter for peanuts and bought that. Don't let anyone tell you the Komura converters are junk 'cause they are not. I was amazed at how the combination preformed. Is it slow? Yes, but at least I have 500mm's of sharpness if I need it. Tripod is mandatory for that setup. John W

I'm very happy with my komura 2x converter as well. I used it with the 80mm to get a better portrait length, before I got a 150mm.

Wow!! I have a chrome 250 and was thinking in selling it... It came with the camera and never used. On a second thought I will give it a try.

I've used a 250 Sonar for years. It's always been a favorite of mine. If you don't have one you should. Ansel Adams used one for landscapes so it can't be all that bad!

You seem to do fine with almost any lens/camera combo and I really like some of your Rollei TLR shots. Of course for viewing these, on sites like this, a good scan is needed also.. I've seen many nice photos taken with good equipment, that just didn't hold up because the scanner was the weak link. I know we're not suppose to talk digital, but it's pretty darn hard to post a shot like yours with out it. I guess we could mail our photos in??? John W

Hi John, thanks for the nice comment. I do use my Rollei TLRs more often for sure but for this particular day I specifically went to shoot under and amongst the oak trees primarily using my not-used-enough 40/4 FLE Distagon lens. Brought the 250/5.6 Sonnar as an after thought and because there was some room in the bag! These shots taken at the end of my couple hours there excited me more. Have not even developed the other rolls yet!

And yes, I'm a hybrid shooter. Fiercely dedicated to film not only because of the look of B&W film but also I just do not find joy or inspiration in shooting with digital especially for this kind of work. I've been scanning since late 90's when I used a flatbed with an upside slide light table to capture negs/slides and after tens of thousands of scans since think I have it down pretty well or best I can to try and capture the film character. But I do scan as I don't have the space or time these days for a printing darkroom. :-(
