Jim's escort??? You mean his fire-god, helper, always-there-friend, - the lonely guy from Joshua Tree?

(Hmmm this post sounds a bit weird...)

Per... out of control! I love it! I have to be nice to Bill. After all I bought his 8x10 enlarger!

I'll have some carbon transfer prints to show everyone. Did some printing today. You guys doing PL/PT will love this process. Wait till you see some good prints from Vaughn and some not so good ones from me. You will be as hooked as I am.

Come on campers speak up!!

I'll be sleeping in my own bed, thank you...though camping does sound fun! The Boys and I just got back from a couple nights backpacking along Redwood Creek. Beautiful weather, incredible groves of redwoods, and deep pools. I took the Diana camera and had some fun.

Thx

Steve

We will meet in front of the Arcata Community Center at 9am on Monday. It has a covered entryway, bathrooms inside, and couple benches outside. I would have rented a room there to meet in ($45/hr) but they also want a $500 deposit...and we probably don't need one anyway.

Across the parking lot is the Health Sport Fitness Center -- they have coffee, tea, juices, smoothies, bagels, etc for sale starting at 8am.

I have attached a PDF with map/directions.

I'll be there at about 9am or so, but will have to be at work at around 10am.

FYI...those planning to camp at Patrick's Point State Park...don't worry about the "unavailability" of sites through the reservation system. They are not available because they are not taking reservations (there is not enough people camping there to make it worth their while). You will have the place almost to yourself during the week.

Hello all!

Just found out my email address through the university will be unavaiable from 7pm on the 17th (Friday) to Sunday (the 19th) until noon.

Here is my home email address which you can use if you need to get a hold of me.

vmhutchins3@att.net

On the weather front...

After several weeks of sunny weather, it looks like a few showers on Monday (campers beware!)...but just enough to clean up the landscape and the air. Followed quickly by partly cloudy days and sunny days. Sounds like a good mix for photography.

As far as I have heard, the meeting place for Monday morning is still the Arcata Community Center. If it is raining on Monday morning, it has a large covered entryway, and a lobby to get out of the wet. The health center across the parking lot has a small coffee and goodies shop and tables inside to enjoy them at.

See ya all soon!

OMG, is it Monday yet?????
Actually, it's a good thing it isn't as I'm still matting and trying to get everything together so I can leave tomorrow morning. Do we have a final list of attendees yet? Vaughn, is there a well stocked camera store up there?

Vaughn, is there a well stocked camera store up there?

Not really...the one and only camera store is only semi-stocked. I would not count on it to supply anything besides the basics (and LF film is not a "basic", for example). They do have 35mm and 120mm film, B&W and color, but perhaps not a full line-up.

However it always has an incredible photo gallery...I just gave them a call and right now they have an all-Ansel Adams show (all original prints). Worth stopping at. I have not seen this show yet, but typically there are 15 to 20 prints on the walls. It is Swanlund's Camera, located in Eureka on F Street between 5th and 6th Streets.

Vaughn

Here is a quick link to our 10-day weather forecast...take it with a grain of salt, of course!

http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/ski/tenday/95501?locid=95501

Camera store update. Swanlund's seems to have an adaquate selection of roll film, B&W and color (neg and trans) -- color is mostly Fuji due to difficulty in getting Kodak these days. I checked out the AA exhibit. Twenty-five photos, mostly 16x20. All the usual suspects...Moonrise to Mono lake, Aspens (a couple of them) to Oak, Snowstorm, Monolith to El Capitan, and even the Sierras from Lone Pine (the one with the horse and the letters "LP" spot toned off the hill behind the town.) Plus a few more images from around the Western USA -- plus Arnold Newman's portrait of AA outside his Carmel darkroom. The sign said "31 Images", so they still might be hanging the show -- there are a couple short walls with no photos on them. If you have not had to see a "real" AA print, this is a good opportunity to do so...the lighting is fair to good.

The store is open until 5:30pm M-F and until 5pm on Saturday -- closed Sunday.

THANKS!

Thanks to everyone for attending. I had a great time - hope everyone else did the same. The weather was spectacular. It was amazing to have filtered sunlight with absolutely NO wind. Of course Vaugh planned it that way!

A special Thanks to Vaugh who got us the space at Humboldt State University!
And a special thanks to everyone who made presentations about their specialties.

We ARE doing a book. It will be bigger that originally projected. If will have photographs from EVERYONE who have attending one of my workshops in the past 7 years and who want to see their work printed in book form. In a week's time we will have the basic layout and tech. info so those who wish to participate can submit their images.

Test book already done!

I had a test book done in China while staying there last month.
After working with the printer there (in Shanghai) I know how to get max quality for the least amount of money.

The hard part will be to contact everyone who have participated in workshops in the past 7 years. So spread the word!

The goal is to make a special book, a collector's item if you will.

If anyone is interested in having work in this book an email marked "WORKSHOP BOOK" should be sent to printsales (at) volquartz.com

per, et al...

I enjoyed meeting everyone and am glad I could host the workshop here at HSU. Wish I had some free time and could have photographed with some of the group...but at least I live in this incredible place and have the redwoods as my extended backyard. Looking forward to seeing some images taken up here during the week.

It was fun giving the carbon demo...please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about the process. And a reminder...if you would like a PDF of my carbon printing instructions, email me and I'll get it off to you ASAP.

I won't be able to be at Joshua Tree in February, though I wish I could. I will include, however, a photo taken on my last photo trip to Joshua Tree...(which was 15 years ago next week).

Yours,

Vaughn

Vaughn, thanks for the use of the facilities at the University. It was nice changing 11x14 holders in a "real darkroom". I took a detour on Monday AM and went to Yosemite. The color was fantastic and I finished my 11x14 and 8x20 holders. By the way Kerik has just hung his work at the Ansel Adams gallery. The wet plate work is stunning. Especially the 14x17. If anyone is in the valley be sure to not miss this fine work.
Hum, build a wet plate 14x17??? After seeing Kerik's work it may be in the distant future.
