Sean,

From someone who has never been to NZ, is there a difference between north and south island? Is one more developed than the other? One more rural than the other or they just about the same? here in the U.S., the east coast is so different than the west coast and New England is so different than the southwest.

How would you describe the difference between the two islands?

Just wondering.

Sean

My name is Michael Dunn and I have just found this site. I am a NZ citizen, currently in Wellington, where I previously owned a house in which I built a wonderful darkroom, with an 9 ft by 32 inch sink and 2 4X5 Omega enlargers.

Unfortunately, I had to sell the house, but still have all my darkroom gear in storage. I shoot mainly medium format 6X7, 6X9 and 6X17, some 4X5, some 35 mm. Given the lack of a darkroom I am scanning some of my work, but it is not the same as working in the darkroom.

If you are still in NZ, it would be good to catch up with you.

Best regards

Michael Dunn

You don't have to worry about Sean, he is our guy in Whangaparaoa. :D He isn't going anywhere.

BTW, welcome to APUG, Michael. I hope you will post an introduction and tell us more about yourself.

I'm coming back to Wellington around the beginning of April this year. We've been living and working in the EU for the past few years, but with the arrival of a "small format" version of ourselves, we've decided to return.

After playing around with a d*g*t*l camera, I went back to film via classic medium format cameras from the 50's and 60's. I've also got a '37 9x12cm camera and picked up a 5x4 recently. My usual walk-around camera these days is a 6x6 Russian folder.

Plenty of interesting photo ops in Wellington and environs.

Hi Guys, I just joined today, I'm a Brit (sorry) but I live here in Wellington with my partner, so if anyone fancies meeting up, I'd be very keen.

BTW anyone know where I might get a DB lens converted to Copal shutter?
Cheers

Hi freespirit76 (sorry, I don't know your name), welcome from Hawaii. Glad you joined up. I haven't made my way to Wellington yet, but may do so someday.

Oh, I've been to New Zealand. Just not Wellington. My last trip was in 2005, I spent time around Queenstown and Mt Cook on the South Island, and the Bay of Islands on the North Island.

Hi Freespirit......I'm in Wellington, there's a few of us on the forum. Most don't seem to be very active, I haven't been online for a few months.

What part of Wellington are you?

I think you'll have to do the lens conversion yourself, buy the bits on the net. I sold my Sinar P 8x10 last year, there aren't that many users over here and even less as time goes by.

Titahi Bay.....out of town a bit. Have you checked out the GRINZ meetings at WPS?

Clayton

nope! was that all about then?
I was up near titahi bay on Saturday, not able to do much photography right now though because of a bad back, I can't even bend down to focus! But at least I found this site while bored recovering at home in bed, so it's got an upside I guess!

Hi

There's a few of us around in Wellington. I'm in the northern suburbs. I've a variety of kit up to 4x5, but mostly shoot with old MF folders.

I have a couple of shots in my APUG gallery from Wellington. Plus a few more here and here.

Oh, NZ, a world away, and just across the Tasman...
A little OT, but today I finished my gallery wall titles for Ilfochrome Classic framed prints of NZ/South Island: Southern Alps/Lake Mathieson; Matai Falls/The Catlins; McClean Falls/The Catlins, Wairarapa Beach, Doubtful Sound, Haast Pass...several others coming. These are from my 2006 21-circumnavigation of South Island. Next visit is November this year concentrating on North Island. If I wasn't pressed for organising so much other local/interstate travel up to August (I have a 4-week sortie Darwin-Broome-Darwin mid-July) I'd jump over The Ditch to Auckland and join you all!

I reckon it's a really, really great idea for an enterprising APUGger in N or S should start a dedicated film group and get all the formats working on the scenery with weekend "field workshops" especially in autumn, with scenery that is really is to die for (even when it is raining, as it is in all of my images!). You bet I'd make every endeavour to join in!!
