I've looked at the normal outlets here in the USA and do not see any listed. I did see one site in Japan that showed some 160NC in 4x5. So, I'm thinking it too has been dropped along with the cut they did last year on a lot of 4x5 stuff.

Fujifilm 160NS is discontinued across the board. It is no longer being manufactured. I was in Japan a few months ago and was looking for this film and could not find it anywhere, even in the largest film store in all Tokyo. I was told it will not be made again.

Sucks........

There might be stock still out there, as the discontinuation was very recent. I have some recently made Reala and that too is 100% discontinued. I searched all over Tokyo looking for Reala and 160NS and came up 100% empty.

Basically only the films that got redesigned packages now survive at Fujifilm. 160NS did not get the redesigned package, 400H did.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong as 160NS was quite cheap compared to 400H.

By the way, I can still buy 160NS in China, but my film guy tells me that he cannot order any more.

So this leaves Kodak as the sole manufacturer of colour print film in sheets.

Yes this link provided at the time a bit of positive news, but as we've seen the outcome was not as good as it looked at first. I just see it as availability is what's on the shelves. I do not seek further then that any longer after the last few years of holding out hope with everyone else.

Yes Fuji discontinued that emulsion in 5x4 with a couple of others a year or so back. What is still available is back-inventory, like a lot of the films that were discontinued.

Sure there are substitutes, and there is digital, but that's not the point which is that we depend on one sole manufacturer now. Besides, print films are of higher technology than slides.

Well of course...but you have to understand the niche that color film now is and that these are business decisions. I think a lot of people on here set them selves up for disappointment by grossly underestimating how much more the color film market is going to shrink.

Aside from enjoying how different black and white film hand printed looks from it's digital counterparts, I prefer it far more than color film because it is stable, will be around for a long time and I can bank my career on that.

If I insisted on using color film all the time, I would stock up on the sure bet and create images that make the technological data sheet an afterthought...

+1

I would like to add that I disagree with the statement that the other poster said about slide film being less technological than color negative film.

I'm very well aware of the reasons but that doesn't make me more comfortable.

E6 vs C41

I trust PE won't mind for quoting him:

Every time they discontinue a C41 film we lose one of the peak achievements of the photochemical industry.

You are in control of your comfort zone, not the makers of film.

Start supporting a company who really does care about film users and buy Kodak / Alaris Portra 160 or Ektar 100. These films were designed with scanning in mind which means they have the latitude for you to interpret their strengths to arrive at the look you want.

Move film forward by moving your self forward....we are all in this together...

Indeed, Ektar is my main colour film, still I don't like the fact that there is only one source left for C41.

I will shoot E-6 as long as it's available, I very much dislike C-41 even Ektar or Portra, the way it scans to me is very uneven grain, not smooth like E-6 I can't explain it but I just find even professional C-41 to have a displeasing grain

I think you should stick with it as long as possible, I do know what you mean, it's like some color channels are more noisy than others, so it takes a bit of dialing in to arrive at a pre-set you can deploy without too much experimentation. E6 does scan incredibly easy, very smooth and natural.

I feel for color film shooters these days, a lot of adaptation going on and it is not over yet....

Thanks, glad you understand, yes, color channels is a good way to put it, it's almost like "pixel failure" on digital. Random "noise". It's not usually something that shows up in small prints, but I never know how big I'm going in the future.

Thanks man, you keep at it too

I cannot stand print film. Sorry, I just cannot. Occasional B&W is fine, but colour print is a resounding NO.

E6 is not that easy to scan, definitely not. It requires care and an awareness of ensuring the scanner does not cook already well-enunciated primaries, which some machines are prone to do. One of the most difficult E6 emulsions to scan was the hideously ugly Velvia 100F with its sinister mustard overtures interfering with yellow and green. I was never happy with any scans from this and ditched it a long time ago.

Just a thought on C41 production by Fuji.

Just as with Kodak, the C41 production at Fuji is a "byproduct" of their motion picture film production in terms of volume. With Fuji exiting the MP market, it seems to me to be inevitable that they exit the C41 market as the production of chemicals and market declines. They did have the lions share of E6, but Kodak dominated the MP and negative market.

So, expect product losses in Fuji's C41 lines.

Just my opinion and some thoughts.
