No. 6 contrast filter

Has anyone ever heard of one? As in, one step above grade 5, which I've always known as the most contrast available.

I needed a #4 and #5, found three on ebay, #4, 5, and 6, see attached.

Was this for some specific paper?

I can't find any info about a No. 6 filter via Google.

A manufacturer can name filters them whatever they want. The established measure of contrast is ISO(R).

For a manufacturer to sell a paper as grade 3 it has to have an ISO(R) between 80 and 95. However, VC filters have no such requirement ---- Taylor and Francis, The Variable Contrast Printing Manual

I have a set of those same filters for the old Ilfospeed Multigrade II paper. "6" was very contrasty.

They do provide a "5+" now...not sure how different from "6" it would be.

filter numbers and ISOcontrast grades are not the same, unfortunately, but theoretically an ISOgrade 6 exists and can be reached with a tri-color -blue filter in combination with a very bright light source. Inever had a negative that needed such a high contrstbut tested tri-color filters fordual-filter printing.

I once owned Ilford, Kodak, and Dupont filters. On the same paper, each brand's filter # printed differently. The higher the contrast #, the bigger the difference. They were closer in their low contrast #'s, but still slightly different. For awhile, I actually used the differences when looking for a little more nuance.

Just use a deep blue tricolor filter, like a 47 or 47B

I must apologize. I was mistaken, Kodak used to provide a -1 and 5+ filter. -1 was analagous to 00 but I'm not sure if 5+ might have had a touch more contrast than the Ilford 5...although I did find myself using it from time to time thinking I was getting slightly more punch...
