Fixed it. Thanks for pointing out my error.

It's still available too, but only for 10 more minutes.

Nah it's available for a bit longer. Time enough to make a few phone calls and see if anyone is crazy enough to lend me that much cash.

As of now it says: Time left: 8h 8m 19s Today 9:53PM

I'll try and control myself to resist buying it , and console myself with the thought that there's very few actual shooting situations it would be appropriate to use it for.

A friend of mine actually has one of the Nikon manual focus 6mm lenses (I think his is a non-fisheye), he did in fact purchase it for a product shoot for the interior of an airline airplane that was just coming out, at the time back in the 70s or 80s it cost him $20,000 for the lens which was exactly the commission he made on the job.

These really are quite rare and pricey for a reason.

If any of you own a Leica you shouldn't laugh at this lens, because unlike a leica, this lens really is rare and special.

Food for thought.

I'll still laugh at 100k for any camera lens.

Your friend, though - assuming he could find someone else who wanted or needed one, if he could sell it for even half what he paid he'd have made a tidy sum on the job. I understand that sort of thing. Owning one of these as some bizarre status symbol though? Even if I were a multimillionaire there's far more useful things I could spend a hundred large on.

He didn't own it as a status symbol he owned it because he needed it for a product job, and he told the airline that this is the lens he needed to give them the effect they wanted of the open space of their new Boeing I believe it was a Boeing, and so they gave him the money for that lens.

But as I understand it it's a custom job that nikon made for this very special focal length, this version online is the Ai Version which I believe is the digital auto focus one, so not sure if it's truly the same one or not. And this says fisheye and I thought he said it wasn't a fisheye.

He said that he doesn't want to sell it because of her specialist, and he still uses it from time to time, but as a status symbol just mostly probably because once sold, he would never be able to fight again as product shoots don't pay what thy used to.

A 100k camera lens (or any other bit of equipment for that matter) is only a status symbol for those that cannot afford it. For those that can make it pay off itself after a few jobs it is merely a tool. In this particular case it seems to me that lens paid for itself many times over.

Don't look at it like it's $121K. Look at it like it's only 1/8 million dollars.

The price of being misunderstood...

I KNOW he had a need for it. I can't imagine that very many people do, however.

Well yeah, I totally agree with you. Was my point THAT misunderstood??

If you have a need for it and can make a reasonable ROI for it, fine, it's a business expense.

How many people does that really apply to for a $100k camera lens, though? It seems to have applied to Stone's friend; I totally agree.

I'm not sure why that wasn't clear. My amusement is at the idea of anyone buying this just because they can while having no need for it. I'm sure that's not many people but the number is probably non-zero. And I'll continue to think THOSE (but not those with a real need who can make it work for them) are nuts.

My guess is that the next person to purchase one of these at the prices listed, maybe not that ridiculous one, but the reasonable $30,000 price would probably be a filmmaker who is looking for a really intense wide look and will probably pick one up for a movie. it will obviously not be the same as the 6mm look on still film, but still very wide probably what 11mm in movie format? Pretty intense for a scene that calls for it.

This one can be had for a mere $65,000 BIN; a bargain by comparison. Everything is relative!

The $65,000 one was used in for a movie. This is copied from the descrption:
This particular lens was purchased by me over 20 years ago, and has been out of the box just for one shoot. That was a very unusual shoot, for the Imax film “Antarctica”. The lens was used at the South Pole for a 24-hour time-lapse shot of the sun moving all the way around the horizon at a constant elevation. You can buy the dvd of “Antarctica” on eBay if you would like to see that shot.
