I thought serial nos. were not 'rare'- they were unique !
Also, I have tried reading the serial number several times. It seems ordinary enough. Am I missing something ?

My understanding is only a handful of these were produced with the 8-digit serial number scheme. After that, Nikon introduced a new range of 7-digit numbers.
