Nikon FE rewind knob assembly

I am fresh out of fishing hooks. Can I pull up on part 708 with a tatters hook (crochet needle?

I Have JIS screwdrivers, no snap ring pliers, so I can't get the ASA dial saftly. Can I actuate the door lock when the base is removed? If do, what do I want to push down on?

A spring-hook (used for repairing woodwind musical instruments) is sort of like that. Will the tatters hook still grab part 708 with the ASA dial still in place?

The ASA dial is not relevant to this. Leave it in place. Don't take the base plate off. No screwdrivers are need for this operation. You only need to reach down into the hole left by the rewind shaft, find the little silver piece that is protruding into the hole slightly, and pull up on it. This is a five minute job as long as you can feel around to get the proper leverage on the tab. The more complicated you make it, the less likely you are to succeed.

Thank you, when you say pull tab, you mean pull toward the base of the camera or pull tword the ASA dial? And us the tab close to the base or further down*balancing on hot shie)

Have you thought about how this mechanism works?

Normally, as you pull the rewind shaft up, its shoulder pulls up the tab that is formed by the top end of part 708 in the repair manual diagram on the previous page. That tab is just visible if you look down into the hole. It's just above where the film cassette would be. Because the rewind shaft is fallen in, your goal is to pull that thingy up with an improvised hook, just like pulling the knob up would do ordinarily, and the back will open.

You don't need any screwdrivers, you don't push down towards the base of the camera, you don't take off the base plate. I don't think I can explain this any further and maybe you need to show the camera in-person to someone who understands film cameras.

Oooh, thank you, I was thinking of the locking mechanism by itself. And thanks to FixOldCameras youtube channel I had it in my head that the ASA dial completely covers part 708 that I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to accidently pull that. And just want to cross T and dot I's since they srnt making more.
