Wow- nice. I'd go used, as most folks buying F6's back in the day took really nice care of them- I've yet to see a beat up one! I would love to shoot an F6/Nikon setup, if I could just cure this freakin' Leica addiction I have!

Keep the addiction even if it means buying a Leica and a few more lenses. Then if you behave yourself you can treat yourself to the Nikon F6.

Surprisingly there are no Nikon F6 cameras for sale at KEH. Many on eBay however. I have had good luck with KEH in the past. I don't want an F5 because it is too heavy for what I'm planning.
Normally I shoot medium format but for this trip I need a light weight AF and AE camera that I can carry all day, and use quickly with lots of exposures per each roll of film.
They had a LN- last night for a bit over $1500. All this praise makes me wonder if I need one.. Last time I used my F5 bodies was a year back on vacation (holiday ) I shot 8-10 rolls of Fujichrome. Auto bracketed, so 3 pictures of every subject. I used matrix metering, aperture priority auto, worked perfectly.

Sounds like you are after the perfect camera. I bought a mint D5 from MAP Camera in Japan, I got a great deal. If you go directly, not through Ebay no sales tax.
Best Regards Mike

A123 batteries are as easy to get as film, Mail order . Battery junction sells "titianium inovations" brand batteries for just a few cents more than a US dollar. These particular batteries are well rated by testers and consumers.Buy them by the 20 pack or so and save on shipping. The battery chemistry stores very well, like ten years, with little loss in capacity. they also hold more energy than an "aa" cell. Many high power flashlights and the steri-pen water purifyer uses two also. I have moved to an exclusive A123 battery platform for all of my battery needs and couldn't be happier. OH yes, these batteries are affected much less by cold temps then others also. They also weigh less due to lithium chemistry. These are a definite step up from alkalines. I Highly recommend them. order them 2 weeks before you go. the can be recharged if you get the right ones also, with solar, if you go on unsupported trips.. embrace the new generation of high power light weight batteries.

I own a F6 for 8 years now. Used it 3 times. I added a FM2n, FE, two N2000 and two F3 and used all that bunch more than the F6.

The F6 is fantastic, I can agree. But it’s so damped that I lose touch with the scene. I need to feel that I captured the image same as I need to feel the road when I drive a good sports car.

Oh, I’d buy used. They’re all mint anyways.

You must have very good vision! I'm 62, the illuminated focusing spots on the F6 is another plus. After I've been saying how great the F5 is, now I want a F6!.

When compared to other SLR, i am dumbfounded by the price that people pay for an F6.
What is the main attraction...Typically... that convince people to pay so much more for this camera.?
Is it mainly the Speed/Advanced auto focus.?
Besides that, what does this camera do so much better than a.....
Nikon F2-F5
Canon F1
Olympus OM-take your pick
Etc etc
Thank You

The autofocus is superior to all other Nikon film cameras. I love my F5 s . In film I shoot very little 35mm. I shoot a lot of medium format film. Nikon DSLRs feel like the F5 and F6.

Did you get this yet? How is it? I have been on the fence about one of these for a few years.

The autofocus is superior to all other Nikon film cameras. .

I had always assumed from a lot of F6 v F5 comments that the F5 still had an autofocus at least equal to the F6. In saying this I know and accept that the black focus points on the F5 is a minus compared to the F6 but are there other aspects of the F6 autofocus that are better and is there a source of evidence for this such as Nikon specs, and or reviews? Thanks

Have a look at Thom Hogan's review:

I have the F6. It is in no way, shape or form lightweight.
I also have a Nikon N75. It is very lightweight, has AF and AE, and takes very nice pictures. And is ridiculously cheap. You can buy several hundred for the price of one F6...

With the Nikon 50 1.8G:

And with the Sigma Art 50 1.4:

Yes I have a few N75s also and love them. I must have about 30 35mm cameras and the N75 and N55 are my go-to cameras for many situations. Also, it turns out the N55 takes the same AA battery holder as the N75, not many people know that. The N55 could be had for almost nothing and is pretty incredible for less than a roll of film (though I suspect that may change). I got my N55 body from KEH a few years ago for $7 it was essentially brand new.

BTW, both the N75 and N55 are newer designs than the F5 and F100! In my book the N75 and N55 are two of the best plastic amateur SLRs ever made.

The failure rate among my F/N two digit AF Nikons has been high. A small sample but from two F60s and an F55, only one F60 is still functioning. They are definitely entry level quality, which is unfortunate as plastic AF SLRs have a lot to commend them. Is the F75 made to a higher specification?

None of my plastic Nikon SLRs have failed. I have more failed Rollei SLs (three) that I could not fix. But this thread did prompt me to scan ebay for a few more N55/N75 bodies, though I suspect I already have plenty of 35mm SLRs for a lifetime.

Black N75s are really cool. Lightweight and tiny. Don't think this is hijacking the thread as these cameras are alternatives to F6 and up for comparison to F6.

This is a little off topic but my favorite focal length is 28mm and I have 28mm for all my 35mm systems. Turns out those 'free' 28-80 lenses that come when you want a N75 body are pretty good at the 28mm setting. I did some tests with Zeiss 28mm and Nikkor 28/1.8 vs the plastic zoom and the are all very very close at the edges (this is stopped down to f8). So, I actually do use those plastic zooms! I see now that that one has the crummy filter still on it.

My N75(F75) has been more reliable than my F6. The 28-80 3.3 5.6G lens's quality belies its price and lightweight feel.

My Nikon AF SLRs. My favourite is the F4 mainly for the fact that it uses AA batteries and does not have any memory settings to lose if I pull the batteries for an extended period of time!
But if you want a lightweight camera to pack along, it is the N75.

Love the F4, I have been eyeing them on ebay for some time. The major reasons I want one are the lack of LCD screen (all knobs and buttons!!) and I'm a fan of the design studio.

Compared to later cameras it is so nice not needing to read an owner's manual to figure things out.

I also have two F75s that i got almost for free.

Used it with the 28-80mm kit lens and slide film (Sensia 200). In use it felt very lightweight and really uncomplicated. I only used the central focus sensor with matrix metering and all frames were focused and exposed perfectly.

Unlike its predecessor (F65), it offers the option for either center weighted or matrix metering when using exposure lock. F65 would switch to center weighted no matter what metering mode you had normally activated, something that confused many people. Another cool feature is that it first pulls out the whole roll out once you load it, proceeding to count down from frame 36 as you shoot and pulling the exposed frames back in the canister. Therefore, if you accidentally open the back, the exposed frames are totally safe.

Only downside is the somewhat smaller than usual viewfinder, but it really doesn't matter. It's a great camera.
