I have recently purchased a Nikon F2S in mint condition. The meter is spot on to my handheld meter and I doubt this thing has had more than a few rolls of film through it. Everything about this camera is perfect with one exception.

The split prism in the middle of the focusing screen has a splotchy haze to it that is most noticeable in bright sunlight. I found an old post about cleaning Nikon focusing screens that mentions a clear film between the two halves of the screens that must be removed when disassembling the screen.

So my question is this.....

If I were to take the focusing screen apart and remove the clear film, would I need to replace the film or can the screen be reassembled without the film with no adverse effect to the use of the focusing screen?

I have taken a F2 focusing screen apart to clean, the only clear film I encounted was a thin strip of sticky clear tape bound around the edges. This may have been to keep the two halves together or to keep dust out from between the two halves or both, I do not really know. However I did reasemble it, once cleened, without the tape and thus far ir has been fine but it is only 18 months since I clened it so not much time has passed and I have only put a dozen or so films through the camera since the clean.

Regards...W

Ok. That sounds a little easier to deal with. Thanks for the reply.

If you are unable to clean it, find an "E" screen. You'll never look back at prism focusing screens again.
